A matched pair of forearm bracers cut from vegetable tanned cowhide, tapered so they sit wide below the elbow and narrow at the wrist, with a full Elder Futhark rune line embossed down the centre of each and three stitched straps closing onto steel roller buckles. The edges are bevelled and burnished, the strap keepers are stitched rather than glued, and the tan is a dyed and hand rubbed finish rather than a painted one.

It is worth knowing what a bracer was originally for, because it was not stopping sword blows. The oldest and most consistent use of a forearm guard is archery. A bowstring released off the fingers slaps the inside of the bow arm hard enough to bruise through a sleeve and hard enough to make you flinch on the next shot, and a strip of stiff leather laced over the forearm removes the problem entirely. Grave finds from across northern Europe turn up small stiff arm guards that make sense for nothing else. Everything the modern reenactment world does with bracers, from the visual weight they give a costume to the way they keep a loose sleeve out of a hand grip, came later. Why the buckles are rollers and why there are three

A roller buckle has a spinning barrel where a plain buckle has a fixed bar. It sounds like a detail and it is the difference between a strap you can adjust with one hand and one you fight with. The roller lets the strap slide over it instead of dragging, so the leather does not scuff at the fold and the buckle does not chew a groove into the strap over a season of wear. On something you put on and take off at every event, that is the fitting that decides how the piece ages.

Three straps rather than two matters for the same practical reason. A forearm is a cone, not a cylinder. One strap at the wrist and one below the elbow will hold a bracer on, but the middle of the panel lifts away from the arm and the whole thing rotates when you grip something. A third strap in the middle pins the panel against the taper and stops the rotation. It is also why these are cut with a curve rather than as a rectangle: a straight rectangle wrapped around a tapered arm always gapes at one end.

The rune line is embossed into the leather rather than printed on it, so the characters have real depth and they catch light from the side. Embossing veg tan leather is a wet process. The leather is cased with water, struck with the tooling, and then allowed to dry in shape, and the impression is permanent because the fibres are compressed rather than coated.

Leather weight and tannage

These are cut from vegetable tanned cowhide at roughly 8 to 9 oz, about 3.5 mm. That weight is chosen deliberately. Thinner leather takes an emboss but wraps limply and creases across the middle. Much thicker and it will not conform to the arm without being wet formed, and it holds the strap tension badly. At 8 to 9 oz you get a panel that stands up on its own, takes a deep tooled line, and still curves to a forearm without a fight.

Vegetable tannage is the reason this piece can be tooled at all. A chrome tanned hide will not hold an embossed impression, will not burnish to a hard edge, and goes grey with age rather than darkening. Veg tan does the opposite: it takes the tooling, it burnishes glassy at the edges, and it deepens in colour every year that it sees sunlight and skin oil. What arrives tan will be noticeably richer in twelve months.

Be honest about protection. These are leather bracers. They will take an abrasion, they will stop a bowstring, and they will keep a sleeve out of your grip. They are not armour against a blade and they should not be treated as such.

Fit and sizing

Measure around your forearm at the widest point, a couple of inches below the elbow, and again at the wrist. These adjust across roughly an 8 to 12 inch range, which covers most adults comfortably. If you intend to wear them over a heavy sleeve or a gambeson cuff, measure over that rather than over bare skin, because a padded sleeve can add an inch and a half.

Set them so they are snug enough not to rotate and loose enough to slide a finger under the middle strap. A bracer clamped tight will restrict the forearm muscles when you grip, and you will notice it within twenty minutes. The buckle straps can be punched with an extra hole if your arm sits between sizes, and a leather punch will do that in a second.

Care

Keep them dry and let them dry slowly if they get wet. Veg tan leather that is soaked and then dried fast next to a heater goes hard and can crack at the fold lines. Feed them with a neutral leather conditioner two or three times a year, worked in thinly and buffed back, paying attention to the strap folds and around the buckle tongues where the leather flexes most. Wipe the steel buckles dry and give them an occasional touch of light oil. Store them flat or gently curled rather than folded, because a hard crease in tooled leather is permanent. A note on handmade variation

These bracers are hand made, not machine made or bulk produced. What arrives will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph. Leather is a natural material, so the tan runs lighter or deeper between hides, the grain and any healed marks show through the dye, and the burnished edges catch light with their own highlights. Even the two bracers in a pair will not be identical twins, because they are cut from different parts of the hide. The dimensions, the material and the build are the same every time. The character is not.

Frequently asked questions

Will these stop a blade?

No. They are leather bracers, not armour. They resist abrasion, they take a bowstring slap and they keep a sleeve out of the way. Anything sharp and driven will go through 3.5 mm of leather.

Will they fit my arm?

They adjust across roughly 8 to 12 inches of forearm circumference, which suits most adults. Measure two inches below the elbow, over whatever sleeve you plan to wear, and contact us before ordering if you fall outside that range.

Are they a matched left and right?

Yes. They are cut as a mirrored pair so the buckles fall on the outside of each arm and the rune line sits square down the top of the forearm.

Can I wear them for archery?

Yes, and it is the one job a bracer was genuinely invented for. The panel covers the inside of the bow arm and takes the string slap. Set the middle strap firmly so the panel cannot rotate.

Will the runes wear off?

No. The rune line is embossed into the leather, which compresses the fibres permanently, rather than printed onto the surface. It will get deeper looking as the leather darkens around it.

How long before they ship?

Processing is one to two weeks because each pair is cut, tooled and stitched to order. Shipping inside the United States is free and returns are accepted within seven days.
