The Braidhorn is a beard and hair comb cut from a single piece of natural horn, with a row of punched dots down the spine, a chevron border cut above the teeth and a Vegvisir at one end. The horn runs from honey amber through to near black across the length, and it comes in its own wooden box.

Combs are the most common personal object in the Viking Age archaeological record. Not weapons, not jewellery, combs. Excavations at Birka, Hedeby and Coppergate in York have turned up thousands of them, usually composite pieces riveted together from antler plates, and they show up in graves of every rank. The English chronicler John of Wallingford, writing in the thirteenth century about the Danes in England, complained that they combed their hair every day, bathed on Saturdays and changed their clothes often, and that this was how they got the local women. Whatever you make of a later chronicler grumbling, the archaeology backs the habit. Ours is made and finished in Memphis, Tennessee.

Why horn beats plastic for a beard

This is the one piece of grooming advice that is actually about physics rather than marketing. A moulded plastic comb has teeth that come out of a die with a seam down each side and a squared off tip, and it builds a static charge as it moves through hair. The seam catches and tears the cuticle, and the static lifts the whole beard into frizz.

Horn does neither. It is keratin, the same protein your hair is made of, so it carries almost no charge against hair and leaves the beard sitting flat instead of flying. And because the teeth are cut and then rounded by hand, each one has a smooth polished tip and no seam anywhere along it. The comb slides rather than snags, which matters most on the tangles at the underside of a long beard where a plastic comb does its damage.

There is a maintenance benefit too. Horn holds a little of whatever beard oil you use and carries it back through the beard next time, spreading oil far more evenly than fingers do. Wooden combs do this as well but they swell and warp if they get properly wet, whereas horn takes water in its stride as long as you dry it.

The horn and the cutting

Ox horn is layered keratin, laid down over the animal’s life, and the banding is why one end of this comb is translucent honey and the other is opaque and dark. Nothing has been dyed or stained. The blank is cut from the flattest section of the horn, pressed flat, then sanded through the grits and buffed until the surface holds a shine.

The teeth are the slow part. They are cut in, then each one is worked on both faces and rounded at the tip, because a tooth that has been cut and left has sharp corners that will scratch skin and pull hair. A finished tooth should be able to run down the inside of your wrist without you feeling an edge, and that is the test we use.

The decoration is cut into the horn rather than printed on. The dot row down the spine is punched, the chevron border is cut and the Vegvisir at the end is engraved. All three will still be there when the comb is old, and they give a slightly grippier surface to hold on to, which matters when your hands are oily from beard oil.

Fit and sizing

Comb sizing is really tooth spacing. This one is cut at a medium spacing, which is the useful all rounder. It will go through a full beard without dragging and it is still close enough to lay a short beard flat and to shape a moustache. If you have a very coarse or very thick beard you may want a wider set comb for the first pass, and if you keep a short stubble beard a finer comb will style it more precisely.

The comb sits in a closed hand with the spine under the fingers rather than in a pinch grip, which is why the spine is thick and decorated rather than thin. Length wise it fits a jacket pocket and it fits the wooden box it ships in, which is worth using, because a comb rattling loose in a bag is a comb with a broken tooth.

Work from the bottom of the beard upward in short strokes rather than dragging from the chin down. That takes tangles out one layer at a time instead of pulling a knot tighter, and it is easier on the horn as well as on your face.

Care

Wash it by hand in cool or warm water with a drop of mild soap, work between the teeth with a soft brush and rinse it clean. Never put it in a dishwasher and never leave it in hot water. Heat is what destroys horn, and a hot soak will bow the comb, cloud the polish and can split it along a layer line.

Dry it with a cloth and lay it flat rather than standing it in a wet mug. Every few months, work a small amount of food safe mineral oil or plain beard oil into the surface with a cloth and let it sit for a minute before buffing it off. That keeps the horn from drying out and deepens the colour. Keep it out of direct sun and off radiators, and keep it in its box when it is travelling.

A note on handmade variation

This is hand made rather than machine made or bulk produced, so what arrives will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph. Every horn differs in colour, translucency and banding, so yours may be mostly pale, mostly dark or split between the two, and the pattern will fall in a different place along the comb. The size, the tooth spacing, the decoration and the finish are the same every time. The character is not.

Frequently asked questions

Will it snag or pull my beard

It should not. Each tooth is rounded and polished on both faces and at the tip, which is the difference between a cut comb and a finished one.

Is the box included

Yes. The comb ships in its own wooden box with a lift off lid, which is also the right place to keep it.

Will the colour match the photograph

Not exactly. Horn colour is natural and every comb is different. If you would prefer a mostly light or a mostly dark one, say so in the order notes.

Can it go in hot water or a dishwasher

No. Cool or warm water and mild soap only. Heat will bow and cloud horn and can split it, and that is not covered by the warranty.

Is this real horn or a plastic imitation

It is real ox horn. You can tell by the banding, which runs through the material rather than sitting on the surface, and by the fact that no two are the same.
