The Waystead is a solid brass belt buckle in a rounded oval frame, brushed rather than mirror polished, with a Vegvisir engraved into the wide right hand face of the frame. It uses a centre bar and a steel tongue, and it comes with a pair of brass screw studs so it can be fitted to a leather strap without stitching, rivets or a leatherworker.

Belt buckles are one of the most common metal finds from the whole early medieval period, and that is not an accident of survival. A Norse belt did far more than hold up trousers. It carried the knife, the pouch, the fire steel, the drinking vessel and sometimes the sword, and every one of those depended on a buckle that would not let go. A cast brass frame and a heavy tongue are what made that work, and the same design has barely changed in a thousand years because nothing better has turned up. This one is cut, engraved and finished in the Czech Republic and ships ready to fit. It sits in the Viking belts and buckles, a step across from the scabbards and sheaths.

Specifications

What the Vegvisir actually meant

The Vegvisir is the eight spoked stave engraved on the face of this buckle, each arm ending in a different arrangement of hooks and crossbars. The name is Icelandic and means roughly wayfinder or signpost, and the source is very specific. It appears in the Huld manuscript, compiled in Iceland in 1860 by Geir Vigfusson, with a note saying that whoever carries this sign will not lose their way in storms or bad weather, even when the way is unknown.

That is worth saying plainly because it is often sold as a Viking age symbol and it is not. The manuscript is nineteenth century, and the Vegvisir belongs to the Icelandic grimoire tradition of magical staves, which ran through the early modern period and drew on a mix of Norse memory, Christian charm literature and folk magic. It is genuinely Icelandic and genuinely old in the sense that it comes out of a living tradition, but nobody sailed to Greenland with one carved on the mast.

None of which makes it a worse thing to wear. A sign meant to keep you from losing your way in weather you cannot see through is a good thing to carry on a belt, and knowing where it actually comes from is more interesting than the invented version.

The brass, the tongue and the studs

The frame is solid brass, which is the right material for a buckle for reasons that have nothing to do with looks. Brass does not rust, so it will not bleed orange into a light coloured belt when it gets wet. It is soft enough to engrave cleanly and hard enough to take the load of a tongue pulling against the bar for years. It also wears in rather than wearing out, going from a bright new gold to a deeper honey colour with handling, and it can be brought back with a polish whenever you like.

The tongue is steel because that is the part under the most concentrated load. A brass tongue on a heavy belt will bend over time. The finish on the frame is brushed rather than polished, which hides everyday scuffing far better than a mirror surface, and the engraved stave is relieved darker so it reads across a room instead of vanishing into the shine.

The two screw studs are the mounting hardware. They pass through the folded end of a leather strap and screw together, so you can fit this buckle at your kitchen table with nothing more than a screwdriver.

Fit and sizing

Measure your belt strap, not your waist. A buckle fits the strap, and the number that matters is the width of the leather in inches. Lay a tape across your existing belt at its widest point. Most men’s belts run one and a half inches, some dress belts run one and a quarter, and heavy work and reenactment belts run one and three quarter or two inches. This buckle takes the common range around one and a half to one and three quarter inches.

To fit it, fold the plain end of your strap back through the frame and around the centre bar, mark where the fold lands, punch two holes through both layers, then pass the screw studs through and tighten them. If your existing belt is riveted rather than studded, the fold has to be cut free first, which shortens the belt by the length of the fold. Account for that before you cut. If you are buying this to go on a strap you have not made yet, allow the fold plus your waist measurement plus about six inches of tail.

Care

Brass needs almost nothing. Wipe it with a dry cloth when it gets marked. If you want the bright new gold back, use a brass polish sparingly on a cloth and keep it off the engraving, because polish builds up white in the recesses and then has to be brushed out. Many people prefer the buckle after a year of handling, when the high points stay bright and the low points have gone dark on their own.

Keep the steel tongue dry. It is the only part that can rust, and a wipe after a wet day is enough. Feed the leather strap it is mounted on with a leather conditioner twice a year, and check the screw studs every few months, because anything threaded will eventually work loose against a moving load. A drop of thread locker on the studs solves that permanently if you never intend to remove the buckle.

Made in the Czech Republic

This is a handmade piece from the Czech Republic, made in a workshop that still forges, grinds and finishes by hand instead of stamping parts out. The smiths there have kept the older way of working, and the wood, horn and leather are shaped and fitted by hand as well. Two pieces of the same design will never be identical, and that is part of what you are buying.

A note on handmade variation

This is hand made, not machine made and not bulk produced, so what arrives will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph. Brass tone, the direction of the brushed grain, the exact depth of the engraved stave and the way the light sits on the frame all vary because each buckle is finished by hand. The dimensions, the material and the build are the same every time. The character is not. Brass in particular photographs cooler or warmer depending on the light, so expect your own to look a little different in your hand than on your screen. Anyone new to this should read the Vegvisir first, then gifts for reenactors.

Frequently asked questions

Does this come with a belt

No. It is the buckle and the two mounting studs. That is deliberate, because most people already have a strap they like and buckles outlive belts by decades.

Will it fit my current belt

If your strap is in the usual one and a half to one and three quarter inch range, yes. Measure the width of the leather rather than guessing from your waist size.

Do I need a leatherworker to fit it

No. Fold the strap around the centre bar, punch two holes and screw the studs through. A screwdriver and a hole punch are the whole tool list.

Will the brass tarnish

It will darken to a warm honey colour with handling, which most people want. A brass polish takes it back to bright whenever you feel like it.

Is the Vegvisir a genuine Viking symbol

It is genuinely Icelandic but not Viking age. It comes from the Huld manuscript of 1860 and the Icelandic magical stave tradition, and we would rather tell you that than sell you a myth.
