This is a solid steel belt buckle with a brushed satin face, a squared frame with generously rounded corners, a centre bar and a hand shaped tongue that rests on it. A small Valknut is stamped into the upper corner of the frame, deep enough to read at arm length and shallow enough that it does not catch a shirt. It is supplied with a tan leather snap tab so the buckle can be fitted straight onto a snap style strap and changed again later.

Buckles are one of the most useful things an archaeologist can find, because unlike a blade they were not reused and unlike cloth they survive. Viking age belts were narrow by our standards, often no more than an inch, and the buckles pulled out of the Birka graves in Sweden are small oval or rectangular frames rather than the broad plates people expect. The wide buckle is a much later fashion. What has not changed in a thousand years is the mechanism you are holding, which is a frame, a bar and a tongue, and it has survived because nothing simpler works. This buckle is cut, filed, stamped and finished in our Memphis shop.

How a centre bar buckle actually holds

Look at the buckle and you will see the frame, a fixed bar across the middle, and the tongue hinged loosely on that bar. The strap wraps around the bar and doubles back on itself, and it is that wrap that carries the load rather than the tongue. The tongue only stops the strap sliding back through, which is why it can be a thin piece of steel while the frame has to be substantial. A buckle fails at the frame or at the bar and almost never at the tongue.

The tongue on this one is shaped rather than a straight pin. The slight bend lifts the tip clear of the strap when the belt is open, so the point does not dig into the leather and wear a groove, and it drops cleanly into a hole when you close it. It is a small piece of hand work that you feel every day and never think about, which is more or less the definition of good fittings.

The steel and the brushed finish

The buckle is cut from solid steel plate, filed to shape and then brushed in a single direction with abrasive so the surface carries a fine parallel grain. A brushed finish is a deliberate choice on a belt buckle rather than a cheaper alternative to polishing. A mirror polish on something that sits at waist height against a shirt shows every scratch it collects in the first week. A brushed face absorbs the same marks into the existing grain and looks the same after five years as it did on the first day.

Every outer edge is broken with a file rather than left as a sharp corner from the cut. That is what stops a buckle chewing through the lining of a coat, and it is the difference you feel immediately between a hand finished buckle and a stamped one.

Fit and sizing

The number that matters here is strap width, not waist size. Measure your existing belt strap across the leather with a ruler. If it comes in at about 1.5 inches it will pass through this frame and sit correctly against the centre bar. A strap much narrower will rattle from side to side inside the frame, and a strap wider than the bar simply will not go through at all, so check before you order rather than after.

The leather snap tab supplied with the buckle is for a snap style strap, which is a strap with a folded end and two studs rather than a stitched loop. That system exists so one strap can carry several buckles, and one buckle can move between a dress strap and a working strap. If your belt is a traditional stitched keeper design, the buckle will still fit it, but the strap will need to be unstitched and refolded around the bar by a leather worker or by you with a stitching awl.

Care

Wipe it with a dry cloth. If the brushed face picks up a deeper scratch, a grey abrasive pad drawn along the existing grain direction, never across it, will blend it back in. Do not use a polishing compound on a brushed finish, because it fills the grain and leaves a patchy half shine. Keep the tongue and the bar dry and put a drop of light oil on the hinge point once or twice a year so the tongue keeps swinging freely.

The leather snap tab is vegetable tanned and will darken and soften with wear, which is what it is meant to do. Feed it with a small amount of leather balm once or twice a year and keep it out of prolonged soaking. Check the snap studs occasionally and press them home if they loosen.

That means a real lead time rather than a warehouse shelf, so allow one to two weeks of processing and a few days more if you have added a rune line or your own design. A note on handmade variation

This buckle is hand made, not machine made and not bulk produced, so what arrives will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph. The brushed grain is laid by hand so its direction and depth vary a little, the corner radii are filed by eye, the Valknut stamp lands at a slightly different depth on each piece depending on how the steel takes the strike, and the leather tab comes from natural hide with its own tone and grain. The dimensions, the material, the mechanism and the finish type are the same every time. The character is not.

Is a belt included

What strap width does it take

Roughly 1.5 inches. Measure your strap across the leather before you order, because a strap that is too wide will not pass the frame at all.

Will it rust

Kept dry and wiped after wet weather it holds up well in normal wear. It is steel, not a plated alloy, so a mark can be blended out with an abrasive pad rather than chipping the finish off.

Can I put my own symbol on it instead of the Valknut

Yes. Choose your own design through the engraving option and it replaces the stamped Valknut rather than sitting next to it.

Will it set off an airport metal detector

It is solid steel, so yes, the same as any metal buckle. Take the belt off at security like everybody else.
