This is a Viking style grooming comb carved from bone, with a knotwork panel running the full length of the spine, three ring and dot roundels cut into that panel, a short Elder Futhark line, and five bronze rivets set across the back in the old composite pattern. The teeth are cut fine and even, and every one of them is rounded at the tip so the comb passes through hair and beard without dragging or scratching the skin underneath.

Combs turn up in Norse graves and settlement layers far more often than swords do. They were personal, they were carried, and they were buried with people who owned nothing else worth burying. The Vikings had a reputation among their neighbours for grooming, and an English chronicler writing in the eleventh century grumbled that the Danes combed their hair every day and bathed on Saturdays, which he felt gave them an unfair advantage with English women. Historic combs were almost always composite pieces, several tooth plates riveted between two long side plates, because a single slab of antler wide enough for a whole comb is rare. The riveted spine on this comb repeats that build honestly rather than faking it with a printed line.

Each comb is cut, carved, filed and polished by hand in a Czech Republic workshop. The knotwork is worked with hand gravers, not stamped, and the rune line is cut with the same tools. Why the rivets are there and what the ring and dot means

The five bronze rivets across the spine are not decoration borrowed from nowhere. Real Viking age combs were built in three parts, a row of short tooth plates sandwiched between two side plates and pinned through with iron or bronze rivets, then the teeth were sawn after assembly so they lined up across the joins. That construction existed because antler is strong along the grain and splits along it too, so a comb cut in one piece from a wide slab would have snapped the first time someone forced it through wet hair. The riveted build spread the load and let the maker use narrow offcuts.

The ring and dot roundels are one of the most persistent motifs in northern European bone and antler work. They run from the Roman iron age through to the medieval period, and archaeologists find them on combs, gaming pieces, pins and casket mounts across Scandinavia, the British Isles and the Baltic. They were cut with a simple centre bit that scribed the circle and the dot in one pass, which is why the spacing is often so regular on genuine finds. On this comb they sit as three punctuation marks along the knotwork band, breaking the interlace so the eye can follow it.

Bone as a comb material

Bone is not a decorative substitute for plastic here, it is the better material for the job. It is dense, it takes a very fine polish, and it holds a cut edge on the tooth tips that stays smooth instead of developing the burrs a moulded plastic comb grows after a few months. It also carries far less static than plastic, which matters if you have fine hair or a dry beard, because a static charged comb lifts hair away from the comb instead of ordering it.

Bone is a natural material and it behaves like one. Colour runs from a pale ivory cream through to a warmer honey tone, and each blank carries its own faint grain lines and occasional darker flecks where the structure of the bone shows through. It is not bleached white, and it is not dyed. Over years of handling, bone picks up a slightly deeper colour from skin oils, in the same way a wooden tool handle does. That is normal and most people prefer it.

Using it on beard and hair

The tooth pitch here is fine rather than wide, which suits a beard up to about medium length, a moustache, and hair that is straight to gently wavy. If your beard is long, thick and prone to knots, work through it first with your fingers or a wide tooth comb and then use this one to finish and shape. Forcing a fine comb through a knot is how combs of any material break, bone included.

For beard oil or balm, put the product on your palms first, work it into the hair, then comb through. Combing the product in with the comb loaded rather than the beard loaded leaves streaks. The rounded tooth tips mean you can press the comb against the skin at the jawline without scratching, which is what makes shaping a beard line possible with one hand.

Care

Wash the comb in warm water with a drop of mild soap when the teeth start to hold product, then rinse and dry it with a cloth. Do not soak it, do not put it in a dishwasher, and do not leave it sitting in a wet shower tray, because bone is porous and prolonged soaking will lift the surface and dull the polish. Once or twice a year, wipe a little mineral oil or a neutral beard oil over the whole comb with a cloth and buff it off. That feeds the surface and keeps the cream tone even. Every piece we sell is made by hand in the Czech Republic. The smiths there work the way the trade has been worked for a long time, heating and hammering the steel, taking the bevels down by eye, and fitting the handle and the leather one at a time. There is no automated line anywhere in it, so small differences from one piece to the next are normal and expected.

A note on handmade variation

This comb is hand made, not machine made and not bulk produced, so what arrives will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph. Bone is a natural material and every blank has its own tone, its own faint grain and its own small darker flecks. The knotwork is cut by hand, so the interlace has the slight unevenness of a human line rather than the dead regularity of a stamp. The rivets are set individually and sit fractionally differently on every comb. The length, the tooth pitch, the material and the build are the same every time. The character is not, and that is the point of buying something a person made.

Frequently asked questions

Is this real bone or a bone effect resin?

It is real bone, carved and polished. You can see the grain under a raking light and you can feel the density in the hand, which is noticeably heavier than a resin comb of the same size.

Will the teeth snag a thick beard?

Not if you detangle first. Each tooth tip is rounded by hand before polishing, so the comb glides rather than catches, but a fine pitch comb of any material will fight a knot. Fingers first, then this comb.
