This is a full grain leather belt in a deep chocolate brown, cut as one continuous strap with a line of Elder Futhark runes stamped into the face about a third of the way back from the tip. The buckle is a brushed steel tongue buckle on a heel bar, the fold at the buckle end is held with solid brass rivets, and the belt ships with a spare solid brass keeper loop on a screw post and a small tin of leather balm.

The runes are stamped rather than printed or burned, and the difference matters more on leather than it does on almost any other material. Leather is cased with water before stamping, which lets the fibres compress and stay compressed under the strike, so the impression becomes part of the structure of the hide instead of a coating on top of it. A printed rune line wears off the high points of a belt within a season. A struck one deepens in colour as the compressed fibres take balm and body oil differently from the surface around them, so it gets clearer with age rather than fainter. How a rune line is struck into leather

The process is short and unforgiving. The strap is dampened until the surface loses its shine but is not wet, which is called casing. Each rune has its own steel stamp, and the stamps are set one at a time against a marked baseline and driven with a single mallet blow. One strike per character. Hit twice and the second blow lands a hair off the first, leaving a doubled ghost edge that cannot be sanded out of leather the way it could be filed out of steel.

That is also why the runes on a hand stamped belt sit at very slightly irregular spacing. A machine embosser would give perfect pitch, and it would also give the flat lifeless line you see on mass produced belts. Elder Futhark suits the technique because its characters are built almost entirely from straight strokes, which is a consequence of runes originally being carved along the grain of wood, where a curve would have followed the grain and split the surface.

The leather and the tannage

This is full grain leather, which means the outer surface of the hide has been left intact rather than sanded down to remove blemishes. That outer layer carries the tightest and strongest fibre structure in the whole hide, so a full grain strap resists stretching and does not crack across the fold. Corrected grain and bonded leather belts both remove or never had that layer, which is why they crease and eventually delaminate at the buckle.

Belt straps are cut from the back and butt of the hide, the region over the animal’s spine and hindquarters, because that is where the fibres are densest and where a long strap can be taken with the least stretch along its length. Vegetable tanning, using tannins drawn from bark rather than chromium salts, produces a firmer belt that takes a stamp cleanly and darkens with use. The trade off is that vegetable tanned leather is more sensitive to water, which is why the balm in the box matters.

Fit and sizing

Do not order by your trouser size. Trouser sizing and belt sizing disagree by two to four inches on most people, and the gap gets wider the more the trousers sit below the waist. The reliable method takes a minute. Take a belt you already wear and like, lay it flat, and measure from the fold at the buckle to the hole you actually use. That number in inches is your belt size, and it is the number to give us.

If you have no belt to measure, run a tape through the loops of the trousers you will wear it with, over the shirt, pulled to a comfortable tension, and use that figure. The middle of five holes is set to your stated size, which gives you two holes of adjustment either way, roughly two inches in each direction. Tell us in the order notes if you would rather the holes sat further one way, for example if you are between sizes or expect the fit to change.

Care

Leather wants oil, not water. Every few months, or whenever the strap starts to look chalky at the fold, put a small amount of the supplied balm on a cloth, work it into the whole strap including the back and the edges, leave it half an hour and buff off what has not soaked in. Do not soak the belt, do not use household oils and do not dry a wet belt on a radiator, which cooks the fibres and makes them brittle.

If the belt gets properly wet, hang it straight and let it dry slowly at room temperature, then feed it with balm once it is dry to the touch. Hang a belt on a hook rather than coiling it tightly in a drawer, because a tight coil sets a permanent curve into full grain leather. The steel buckle needs no more than a wipe, and a grey abrasive pad along the brush direction will blend out a deeper scratch.

Made in the Czech Republic

This is a handmade piece from the Czech Republic, made in a workshop that still forges, grinds and finishes by hand instead of stamping parts out. The smiths there have kept the older way of working, and the wood, horn and leather are shaped and fitted by hand as well. Two pieces of the same design will never be identical, and that is part of what you are buying.

A note on handmade variation

This belt is hand made, not machine made and not bulk produced, so what arrives will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph. Leather is a natural material and every hide takes dye a little differently, so the brown runs from a warm chestnut to a near black chocolate. The grain, the pore pattern and any small healed marks are part of the hide and are not faults. The rune stamps are struck by hand so their spacing and depth vary slightly, and the burnished edge takes its own tone from the section of hide the strap came from. The width, the thickness, the buckle and the build are the same every time. The character is not. If you want the longer version, look at the Elder Futhark and then at gifts for reenactors.

Measure an existing belt from the buckle fold to the hole you use and give us that number in inches. Do not use your trouser size, which is usually two to four inches out.

Is this real leather all the way through

Yes. It is a single piece of full grain leather rather than two thin layers bonded together, which is what most belts at this price actually are. You can see the cut edge on the tip and check for yourself.

Will the runes wear off

No. They are struck into cased leather so the fibres are compressed, not printed onto the surface. They tend to darken and become more legible as the belt takes balm and wears in.
