Prop swords are older than photography, which surprises people. Theatre companies have been commissioning stage blades since at least the Elizabethan period, and the requirements have not changed much: the thing has to read correctly from a distance, it has to be safe in the hands of someone who is not a swordsman, and it has to survive being carried, dropped and stored badly. Those three demands pull a prop sword away from a fighting sword in almost every detail, and the further you push toward looking right at ten feet, the further you move from anything you would swing at a target.

The Power Sword of Masters of the Universe is a piece of toy design first and a sword second, and saying so explains the proportions. It was drawn at the start of the nineteen eighties to be legible as a silhouette at two inches tall on a shop shelf, so every element is oversized: a broad flat blade with a heavy central ridge, a short wide guard, and a hilt built more like a haft than a grip. Scaled up to forty inches that boldness is exactly why it photographs well and why it reads from the back of a hall.

Ours is an independent interpretation rather than a licensed reproduction or a screen accurate copy, and we would rather put that in the body copy than bury it in the small print. Carrying a metal prop sword: what actually matters

The first thing to sort out before an event is the prop policy, because it varies enormously and it is not negotiable at the door. Some conventions allow metal props with a peace tie through the guard. Some allow them only for a photo shoot in a designated area. Plenty allow nothing but foam or resin. Read the specific rules for your event before you travel with a forty inch steel sword, and do not assume that last year’s policy still applies.

The second is transport. A sword this size travels in a case or a padded bag, never carried openly to and from a venue, and never loose in a car where a stop will send it forward. The third is how you actually hold it in a shot. Keep both hands and everyone else’s body outside the arc of the blade, hold the pose from the shoulder rather than the wrist so the point does not drift, and put the sword down between takes instead of resting it against your leg. None of this is complicated. It is just the difference between a prop that survives the weekend and one that does not.

The last point is the honest one: this is a display and cosplay piece. It is not built to be swung at anything. No test cutting, no sparring, no contact with another blade, no striking hard objects.

Why stainless, and what stainless does not give you

Across most of the range we make the case for 1095 high carbon and forge welded Damascus. On a costume and display piece the argument runs the other way and it is worth spelling out. A sword that goes to events gets handled by strangers, sweated on through a long day and then put away in a bag that is not always dry. It then spends the rest of the year on a wall in whatever humidity the room has. Carbon steel in that life spots and stains, and the marks do not come out.

Stainless is built for exactly that. It stays bright with a wipe of a dry cloth, it does not corrode from damp hands, and it comes out of storage looking the way it went in. What you give up is real: stainless does not harden to the level a well heat treated carbon blade reaches, it will not take or hold as fine an edge, and it carries no forge welded pattern because there is nothing in the alloy for an acid etch to pick out differently. Grip, fittings and comfort in the hand

Seven inches of grip takes a whole hand with room behind it, and the cast pommel sits behind that as a counterweight. That is the reason a forty inch sword does not fight you when you hold it out at arm’s length, and it is the single most practical feature of the piece for anyone planning to be photographed holding it for an hour.

Handle it dry or with cotton gloves when you can. Fingerprints will not rust stainless, but they mark the polish and they carry dust down into the relief of the cast fittings, where a cloth cannot reach and a soft brush can. Store it somewhere it cannot fall, and keep it away from children, because length and mass make a sword dangerous whatever the edge is doing.

Care and sharpening

Maintenance is dusting and the occasional wipe. Use a dry microfibre cloth on the flats after handling, a soft brush in the cast relief, and keep the sword out of bathrooms, basements and unheated garages where cold steel gathers condensation overnight. Stainless does not need an oil film to survive storage, which is the whole reason it is used on pieces like this. General storage principles are in steel care.

We do not recommend sharpening it. It carries a blunt display edge because it is a costume and display piece, and putting an edge on it would not make it a sword you could safely cut with, since the assembly is not built for impact. It would only make a prop that gets handled by other people considerably more dangerous. If you want a blade that genuinely takes and holds an edge, look at the hand forged 1095 and Damascus knives in the range, and follow the method in sharpening with a whetstone.

Made in the Czech Republic

This piece is made by hand in the Czech Republic, in a workshop that still works the old way. The steel is forged, ground, heat treated and finished by smiths who learned the trade from the people before them, and the wood, horn and leather are cut and fitted by hand rather than pressed out on a line. That is also why no two pieces come out exactly the same.

A note on handmade variation

This sword is finished by hand, not machine made and not bulk produced, so the one that arrives will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph on this page. The depth of the polish, the tone of the fittings, the crispness of the cast relief after finishing and the exact seat of the grip all vary a little between pieces because each is worked individually. The dimensions, the material and the build are the same every time. The character is not.
