Features & Compatibility

Look at the Lionheart and your eye goes to the guard first. The ornate cross work at the top of the seven inch grip is where the character of this Narnia prince sword replica lives, with a polished thirty three inch stainless blade running out below it and forty inches of sword in total. It is a full size collector piece, made for display, collection and costume rather than for cutting, and the shape it references is the ornate hilted sword carried by Prince Caspian in the Chronicles of Narnia films. Hanging steel on a wall safely is its own small problem, solved in mounting steel on a wall.

The guard is worth understanding, because it is the part of a sword most people take for granted. Early swords barely had one. The Bronze Age and Roman blades that preceded the medieval sword got by with a small stop at the base of the blade, and the Viking age sword kept the guard short and thick. The long cross guard we now think of as the standard sword shape only settles into place around the eleventh century, and it appears for a reason: as fighting shifted and hands came off the shield, the guard had to do more than stop a slipping palm. It had to protect the hand in a bind and give the swordsman something to work against when two blades met. Everything ornate that later grew out of it, the swept hilts and the baskets, is that same function elaborated.

The Lionheart is finished, fitted and inspected in the Czech Republic, and it ships as a bare sword in protective packaging. No scabbard and no stand are supplied.

What a Narnia prince sword replica is referencing

The swords in the Narnia films were designed to look like objects from a place rather than props from a set, and the Telmarine pieces carried by Caspian are the clearest example. Where the Narnian blades are lighter and more heraldic, his is heavier through the hilt, with a broad cross that curls at the ends and a lion worked into the metal, because the lion is the badge running through the whole story. The ornate, weighty hilt is the note this piece takes from it.

Being direct about it, this is an independently made piece and not a licensed reproduction, and nothing about it has been taken from a studio drawing. It is a full size Narnia prince sword replica in polished stainless with ornate cast fittings, finished by hand in the Czech Republic, and people buy it for how it reads on a wall or in a photograph rather than as a screen accurate copy.

What an ornate guard tells you about a sword

On a working sword the guard is a structural component. It sits hard against the shoulder of the blade, the tang passes through it, and everything behind it is compressed onto that tang when the pommel is peened over. Squeeze that stack tight enough and the sword rings as one object instead of rattling as three. Any looseness at the guard on a cutting sword is a fault, because the shock of a cut travels straight into it.

On a display and cosplay replica like this one the guard is doing a different job. It sets the silhouette, it carries the decorative work, and it gives the piece the visual weight that makes it read from across a room. It is assembled to sit correctly and stay put under handling and hanging, not to absorb repeated impact. That distinction is the honest heart of this listing. Hang it, stand it, photograph it, wear it as part of a costume. Do not test cut with it, do not spar with it, and do not strike anything solid with it, because a display assembly and a cutting assembly are not the same object with different price tags.

Why stainless here, and where stainless gives ground

Most of what leaves this forge is 1095 high carbon or forge welded Damascus, and for a blade that gets used we would argue for those without hesitation. On a wall piece the reasoning turns around. A display sword lives in one position for years, gathering room humidity, dust and the fingerprints of whoever lifts it down, and it will almost certainly never see a regular oiling. Carbon steel repays that neglect with staining that goes into the surface.

Stainless does not have that failure mode. It holds its brightness with a dry cloth, it does not mark from a damp hand, and a humid summer leaves it as it was. The cost, stated plainly, is that stainless will not reach the hardness of a well heat treated carbon blade, will not take or hold as fine an edge, and shows no forge welded pattern, because the alloy gives an etch nothing to differentiate. For a piece meant to be seen rather than used, that trade is entirely sensible. The comparison in full sits in Damascus versus stainless.

Grip and handling

Seven inches of grip takes a full hand with room left behind it, and the pommel sits behind that acting as a counterweight, which is why the balance point stays near the guard and the sword does not drag the point down when you hold it out. For photography and costume that is the whole game. A piece that fights you cannot be held in a pose.

Handle it with dry hands or cotton gloves. Fingerprints do not rust stainless but they show on polish and they carry dust into the ornate work, where it needs a soft brush rather than a cloth to remove. Mount it so it cannot be knocked off a wall, and keep it away from children, because a forty inch steel object is dangerous by weight and reach whatever the edge is doing.

Engraving, runes and your own design

Use the rune converter on this page to turn a name, a date or a short phrase into Elder Futhark and we will cut it into the steel or the handle. If you would rather have a Viking pattern than a rune line, choose your own design in the engraving option above the add to cart button and tell us whether it goes on the blade or the handle. Where a piece already carries an engraved design, your chosen engraving replaces it rather than sitting alongside it. On the Lionheart the broad blade flat below the guard is the natural surface, because the guard already carries its own decoration. Lettering and layout are covered on the engraving page.

Care and sharpening

Care is close to nothing. Wipe the blade with a dry microfibre cloth after handling, brush dust out of the ornate work with a soft brush, and keep the sword out of bathrooms, basements and unheated garages where cold steel collects condensation overnight. Stainless needs no oil film to sit safely in storage for years, which is the reason it is the right steel for a display piece. General storage principles are in steel care.

We do not recommend sharpening this sword. It carries a blunt display edge because it is a display and cosplay replica, and stone work would not turn it into something safe to cut with. It would simply put a keen edge on a decorative object in a room where people handle it. If a genuinely sharp, usable blade is what you want, the hand forged 1095 and Damascus knives in the range are built for that, and the technique for them is in sharpening with a whetstone.

Made in the Czech Republic

Every piece we sell is made by hand in the Czech Republic. The smiths there work the way the trade has been worked for a long time, heating and hammering the steel, taking the bevels down by eye, and fitting the handle and the leather one at a time. There is no automated line anywhere in it, so small differences from one piece to the next are normal and expected.

Ransack Viking is a United States company based in North Babylon, New York. We bring the pieces in ourselves, inspect them on arrival and ship them from our own warehouse. If you add engraving, that is carried out here in the United States before your order goes out.

A note on handmade variation

Every Lionheart is finished by hand, not machine made and not bulk produced, so what arrives will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph on this page. The polish on the blade, the tone of the fittings, the crispness of the decorative work and the exact seat of the grip all move a little between pieces because each one is worked individually. The dimensions, the material and the build are the same every time. The character is not.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Narnia prince sword replica an official or licensed product?

No. It is an independently made collector replica, hand made for us in a Czech Republic workshop, with no connection to, endorsement by or affiliation with any film studio, publisher or rights holder. We describe it as a hand finished display sword because that is what it is.

Does it arrive with a sharp edge?

No. It carries a blunt display edge, which is the correct finish for a piece that is going to be handled at events, passed around and hung in a room. It is not intended for cutting and should not be used for it.

What is the guard made of?

The guard and pommel are shaped fittings carrying decorative relief, fitted and finished by hand after assembly. They set the silhouette and hold the grip in place, and they are built for static load rather than repeated impact.

Is it suitable for a costume or a wedding?

Yes, and it is a common choice for both. It is light enough in the hand to carry through an event, and an engraved name or date on the blade turns it into something that stays on a wall afterwards.

Can I put my own design on it?

Yes. Choose your own design in the engraving option above the add to cart button, or run a name through the rune converter for an Elder Futhark line, and tell us whether it goes on the blade or the grip.

How long does shipping take?

Processing is one to two weeks because pieces are finished and personalised here rather than picked off a shelf. Shipping within the United States is free, and returns are accepted within seven days of delivery.

  2. Pretty impressed. Just a couple minor things I’d tweak. Sheath is nice. Wish it had more padding but it does the job. Would still tell others to give this a try.
