Antler is worth understanding, because most people file it under the same heading as horn and the two are not related at all. Antler is true bone. It grows from a pedicle on the skull, is shed and regrown every single year, and while it is growing it is the fastest growing bone tissue in the animal kingdom, laid down in some species at more than an inch a day. Horn, by contrast, is keratin over a permanent bony core and is never shed. That difference is why antler behaves the way it does in the hand: it is mineralised, hard, dense at the outer wall and porous towards the centre, and it takes a polish that shows the bone structure rather than hiding it.

This knife is forged and finished in the Czech Republic, from billet welding through heat treat, grinding, handle fitting and sharpening. It ships in protective packaging with the edge already set, and it needs no sheath because it folds.

Specifications

Antler, horn and bone are three different things

Knife listings use the three words almost interchangeably and it causes a lot of confusion, so here is the plain version. Bone is mineralised tissue from the skeleton, hard and rigid, usually taken from cattle leg bone for handles. Horn is keratin, the same protein family as a fingernail, layered over a bony core, never shed, and it can be softened with heat and pressed into shape. Antler is bone, but not skeletal bone: it grows and is cast off annually, and its outer cortical layer is denser than most ordinary bone because it has to survive being used in combat during a rut.

For a knife handle that density is the point. The outer wall of an antler is what gets used for scales, and it is hard enough to resist wear from pocket carry, stiff enough not to flex around the fasteners, and textured enough on the natural surface to give real grip when a hand is cold or wet. It also warms in the palm within seconds, which is why traditional hunting knives ended up with antler handles rather than metal ones. The pearled and grooved outer surface is entirely natural, which is exactly why every one of these knives looks different.

Why Damascus and not stainless

This is forge welded Damascus: two carbon steels, 1095 and 15N20, bonded at welding heat and worked down together. The 1095 carries the carbon that lets the edge harden. The 15N20 carries nickel that resists the etch and gives the bright lines. Hardened and tempered it sits at 58 to 60 HRC, which is harder and holds an edge longer than the soft stainless in a supermarket knife. See is Damascus steel good for the honest answer.

The reverse case for stainless is real and we will state it. Stainless does not rust, does not stain from a wet hand and does not need a wipe of oil before it goes in a drawer for a year. If you want a knife you can genuinely ignore, stainless is the correct answer. What it will not do is take or hold the fine edge this blade takes, and it has no pattern in it because there is nothing in the alloy for an acid to differentiate. The antler handle and keeping it right

Antler polishes to a depth that synthetics only imitate, and it warms in the hand within seconds. Because it is a natural material, the colour runs from cream through to a deep tan, the pearling on the outer surface is different on every scale, and the fit is worked to the individual piece rather than to a mould.

Keep it out of long soaks and away from direct heat and it stays stable indefinitely. That means no dishwasher, no leaving it on a radiator, no summer in a parked car. Wash the knife by hand, dry the handle with the blade, and leave the knife open until the pivot is dry before closing it. A light wipe of oil once or twice a year keeps antler from looking chalky, using the same routine as a wooden grip, which is set out in wooden handle care.

Care and sharpening

Left wet it will spot, because Damascus is carbon steel under the pattern. Dried and oiled it will look the same in twenty years. Wipe the blade after use, especially after anything acidic, put a thin film of light oil on before a long spell in storage, and add a drop at the pivot once or twice a year, working the action to spread it. Sharpening is straightforward on any stone. Match the existing bevel, work one side in overlapping passes until a burr rises along the full length, turn the blade and match it, then strip the burr with light alternating strokes. A four inch blade is a comfortable length to sharpen, long enough to get a rhythm and short enough to keep the angle steady. The method is in sharpening with a whetstone.

Made in the Czech Republic

Every piece we sell is made by hand in the Czech Republic. The smiths there work the way the trade has been worked for a long time, heating and hammering the steel, taking the bevels down by eye, and fitting the handle and the leather one at a time. There is no automated line anywhere in it, so small differences from one piece to the next are normal and expected.

A note on handmade variation

Every Antlerfold is hand forged, not machine made and not bulk produced, so the knife that arrives will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph on this page. The Damascus pattern depends on how that particular billet folded and where the blade was cut from it, and the antler brings its own colour, pearling and profile because it came off an animal rather than out of a mould. The dimensions, the steel and the build are the same every time. The character is not.

Frequently asked questions

Is antler the same as horn?

No. Antler is true bone, grown and shed every year, hard and mineralised. Horn is keratin over a permanent core and is never shed. They look similar in a photograph and behave quite differently: antler is harder and takes a deeper polish, horn is tougher against impact.

Is it a full sized knife or a small one?

It sits in the middle. Four inches of blade in a four inch handle is enough for real work without being awkward to carry, and eight inches open is a comfortable size in the hand for most people.

Does it come sharp?

Yes. The edge is set by hand on a stone before packing and it will slice paper on arrival. Hardened to 58 to 60 HRC, it holds that edge through genuine use.

Will my antler look like the photograph?

Not exactly, and it should not. Antler colour, pearling and profile change from piece to piece, so yours will be its own. The dimensions and the fit are consistent.

Is this a good gift for a groomsman or a father?

It is one of the most common reasons people buy it, largely because it takes engraving well and gets carried rather than put in a drawer. Add a name and a date and it stops being a product and becomes a keepsake.

How long before it ships?

Processing runs one to two weeks because the knife is made and finished rather than picked off a shelf, and a little longer if engraving is part of the order. Shipping inside the United States is free and returns are accepted within seven days.
