Brass is soft, warm coloured and does not rust, which is why it has been used for guards, collars and rivets for as long as people have been fitting steel to wood. It also gives the eye somewhere to rest against a dark etched blade. This tag collects the pieces where brass does real structural work rather than sitting on as trim.
Where the brass sits
On blades it is the guard or the pommel. Wolfgleam is a Roman pugio with a solid brass guard and a ribbed hardwood grip on a twin fullered waisted blade. Skaldbone is a 36 inch Damascus Viking sword with a bone grip and a brass lobed pommel. Thunderclad is a Damascus war hammer with brass bolsters and a turned brass pommel on a rosewood haft. On axes it is the collar: Knotbeard uses an etched knotwork brass collar on a long hafted bearded head, and Stormcleave carries one under twin Damascus bits with an engraved Mjolnir cheek.
