The Norse spear was the arm most men owned, and it turns up in graves far more often than a sword does. It was cheap, it gave reach in a shieldwall, and a good head could be rehafted forever. If you are assembling a kit that reflects what people actually carried rather than what looks impressive on a wall, this is where to start rather than where to finish.
Shafts, heads and fittings
The complete spears run 60 to 76 inches overall on ash shafts, with leaf shaped heads from 11 to 12 inches. There is a broad leaf head on a 60 inch haft with a brass butt spike, an 11 inch blade on a 76 inch haft with a rune engraved socket and a leather head sheath, a 12 inch blade at 68 inches with a riveted socket, a brass collar and a leather blade cover, a Damascus head at 74 inches with a leather grip wrap and a brown leather head sheath, a winged spear with a 12 inch head on a 72 inch haft with a brass ferrule, an Elder Futhark spear at 72 inches with a red leather grip, a Damascus leaf blade on a rune cut brass socket, one with a brass valknut ferrule and a leather point cover, and a 1095 spear on a seven foot shaft with a knotwork cut socket and a steel butt ferrule. Two heads are sold on their own for anyone hafting a piece themselves, one Damascus with a brass socket collar and a leather sheath. Steel is plain 1095 high carbon at 54 to 58 HRC or forge welded 1095 and 15N20 Damascus at 58 to 60 HRC. Prices run from 239 dollars to 429 dollars.

Measure the room and the doorway first. A 76 inch shaft is a genuine logistical problem and most people work that out after it has arrived, so check timings and handling on our shipping information page.
