This is a short sleeved scale armour shirt built from several hundred individually cut and domed steel scales, each one riveted through its head to a leather and canvas foundation so that the row below overlaps the row above. The neck, the hem, the armholes and the sleeve ends are bound in russet veg tan leather, the rivets are brass, and a small engraved plaque sits at the throat carrying a knotwork border around a short rune line. Scale armour is older than mail by a very long way. It shows up in Egypt and in Assyria more than three thousand years ago, it clothed Roman auxiliaries as lorica squamata, and it stayed in use across the Eurasian steppe for centuries after Western Europe had largely moved to mail and then to plate. It survived that long because it is the cheapest good armour there is to repair. A damaged scale is one rivet away from being replaced.

Ours is cut, domed, drilled, riveted and assembled in a Czech Republic workshop, and it laces at both sides with leather thongs finished in brass aiglets so it can be pulled in or let out over an arming garment. It ships with the shirt and its side lacing. The wooden stand, the loose belt and the spare leather lace lying on the ground in the photograph are studio props and are not included. How scale armour actually works

Every scale is fixed only at its top edge. That is the whole trick. Because the bottom of a scale hangs free, an incoming point that lands anywhere below the fixing line pushes the scale down and outward into the scale beneath it rather than driving straight through, and the two or three layers of overlap stacked behind it have to be defeated together. A cut across the body slides down the smooth domed faces instead of catching. It is a genuinely effective defence against draw cuts and glancing blows, and it spreads impact over a wider area than a single sheet of the same gauge would.

It has a matching weakness that honest sellers should name. A thrust delivered upward, from below, gets in behind the free edge of the scales and lifts them, so scale is weaker against a rising point than mail is. That is exactly why it was so often worn over a padded garment, and why later scale coats were sometimes laced at the bottom edge as well as the top. Our scales overlap side to side as well as row to row, which closes most of the gaps, but the physics is the physics.

18 gauge mild steel and what that weight means

The scales here are 18 gauge mild steel, roughly a millimetre and a quarter thick. That is display and light reenactment weight. It is heavy enough that the shirt hangs and moves like real armour, it will take handling, and it will shrug off a glancing blow from a blunt trainer. It is not certified armour, it is not rated for full contact combat, and it should not be worn into a bout where somebody is going to hit you with intent. If your group runs heavy fighting under an authorised rules set, buy from a supplier whose kit is inspected and passed against that specific rule book. We would rather you knew that before you ordered than after.

Mild steel is used here rather than a hardenable grade because scale wants to be formed and domed in quantity, and because a hardened scale that cracks is worse than a soft scale that dents. Mild steel bends and stays bent, which means you can straighten a scale with your thumb rather than replacing it.

Fit and sizing

This is made to a stated chest size rather than adjusted after the fact, so measure before you order. Take your chest measurement over whatever you intend to wear underneath, not over a bare torso, because a gambeson or a heavy tunic will add several inches. Take your torso length from the top of the shoulder to the point on your hip where you want the hem to sit, since a scale shirt that hangs too low fouls a belt and a scale shirt that sits too high leaves a gap. The side lacing gives you a useful range of adjustment either way, but it cannot rescue a shirt ordered two sizes out. If you are between sizes, order up and lace it in. Height and shoulder width matter as much as chest, so tell us both when you order.

Care

Bright steel scales rust, and a scale shirt has a great many edges for moisture to sit on. Wipe the whole shirt down after wearing it and let it dry fully before it goes away. Give the scales a light film of mineral oil or a purpose made armour oil with a rag once or twice a season. Feed the leather binding and the lacing with a neutral leather conditioner so it does not dry and crack where it turns the corner at the armholes. Store it hanging on a broad shouldered hanger or laid flat, never folded hard and never in a sealed plastic bag, which traps moisture against the steel. There is more in our guide to steel care. Made in the Czech Republic

The work behind this piece happens in a Czech Republic workshop that has kept to the old methods. Steel is forged and heat treated by hand, the grind is taken down by eye rather than by machine, and the handle, fittings and sheath are cut and finished one at a time. Because of that, every piece carries small marks of the hand that made it.

A note on handmade variation

This is hand made, not machine made or bulk produced, so what arrives will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph. Grain, tone, hammer texture and exact profile vary because each one is worked by hand from natural materials, and on a piece with this many parts the variation is easy to see. Scale spacing shifts a little row to row, the leather takes dye slightly differently from hide to hide, and the steel picks up its own pattern of light. The dimensions, the material and the build are the same every time. The character is not.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wear this for full contact reenactment?

No. At 18 gauge this is display and light reenactment weight. It is not certified armour and it is not rated for full contact combat. For heavy fighting you need kit inspected against your group rules.

How heavy is it to wear?

A steel scale shirt of this size is a real load and it sits on the shoulders rather than the hips unless you belt it. Belt it at the waist and a good part of the weight transfers off your shoulders, which makes a long day far easier.

What do I wear underneath?

A padded gambeson or at least a thick wool tunic. Scale worn against a shirt will pinch and will chafe at the armholes, and the padding is what turns a spread impact into something you barely feel.

Is scale better or worse than mail?

Different. Scale beats mail against draw cuts and spreads impact better. Mail beats scale against a thrust from below, because scale can be lifted at its free edge. Both were used side by side for centuries.

Can a damaged scale be replaced?

Yes, and easily. Drill out the one brass rivet, drop in a new scale, set a new rivet. That repairability is the reason scale armour lasted as long as it did.
