A ball pein hammer built the old way, with the head forged from 1095 and the shank forged as a flat bar that passes through the eye and is locked there with a hardwood wedge. The face is dressed slightly crowned, the pein is a true half sphere, and the whole head is taken to a mirror polish. Down the flat of the steel shank runs a line of Elder Futhark, cut deep enough to read at arm length. The ball pein is a younger tool than most people assume. It only became the standard machinist and smith hammer in the nineteenth century, when riveting boilers and ships demanded a hemispherical head that could spread a rivet without cutting into it. Before that the round pein was the exception and the cross pein was the rule.

Head and shank are forged, ground, heat treated and polished in a Czech Republic workshop, and the ash grip is turned and fitted here. It ships as a complete hammer, ready to work. Nothing else in the photograph is part of it. Every rune has a name and a sound of its own, all of them listed in the Elder Futhark.

What the ball actually does

A flat face moves metal in every direction at once. A ball pein does not. Because the working surface is a small section of a sphere, all the force of the blow lands on a tiny contact patch, which is why a ball pein sinks metal, spreads rivet heads, and raises a dome out of flat sheet. Turn the hammer over and you have a flat face for drawing, setting and planishing. Those two surfaces on one handle cover most of what a smith or a metalworker does in a day.

The crown on the face is the detail beginners miss. A perfectly flat face with a sharp edge will leave a crescent shaped mark every time the hammer lands at even a slight angle, because the corner digs in. A face dressed with a gentle crown and a chamfered edge lands cleanly at any realistic angle and leaves a smooth surface. If you take nothing else from this page, take that: keep the face crowned and keep the edge chamfered, and dress it back whenever it starts to bite.

1095, hardness, and why the shank is soft

The head is 1095 taken to 54 to 58 HRC. That is the range a struck tool wants. Harder than that and the face can chip or spall, which is how people lose eyes in workshops. Softer and the face mushrooms and has to be dressed constantly. In this window the face stays flat under work and any damage shows up as a slow deformation you can see and dress rather than a sudden fracture.

The shank is deliberately left soft. A hardened handle would transmit every shock straight into your wrist and would be brittle at the eye, which is the highest stress point on the whole tool. Left in the soft state, the steel flexes very slightly under a heavy blow and absorbs a share of the shock, and the ash grip over it takes another share. That is the reason for the wooden grip, and it is why you should never work with the grip loose or missing.

Bench and wall mounting

This is a working hammer first, so the best place for it is a rack within reach of the anvil, head down, pein toward the wall. If you are giving it as a gift and it is going on a wall, hang it from two pegs under the head rather than from a nail through anything, and keep it out of direct sun so the ash does not dry out. A shop is a damp place, so if it is going to sit unused for months, wipe it and oil it before it hangs. It does not need a stand, and any hammer stood on its face on a hard bench will eventually mark the face.

Care

Keep the face dressed. When the edge of the face starts to bite or the crown flattens out, take it back with a file and finish on a stone or a belt, and knock the chamfer back on. Never grind a hammer face hot enough to blue it, since that will undo the heat treat in exactly the layer you need hard. Oil the head after a wet spell and before storage, and rub the ash grip with boiled linseed once a year to keep it from shrinking away from the shank. Made in the Czech Republic

This piece is made by hand in the Czech Republic, in a workshop that still works the old way. The steel is forged, ground, heat treated and finished by smiths who learned the trade from the people before them, and the wood, horn and leather are cut and fitted by hand rather than pressed out on a line. That is also why no two pieces come out exactly the same.

A note on handmade variation

This is hand made, not machine made or bulk produced, so what arrives will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph. Ash grain runs differently in every stick, the polish takes light in its own way, and the exact sweep from cheek to pein varies a little from one head to the next because it is drawn under a hammer rather than pressed in a die. The dimensions, the material and the build are the same every time. The character is not.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a real working hammer or a display piece?

It is a working hammer. It is heat treated as a struck tool and the face is dressed for use. It happens to be polished and engraved, which is why it also looks well on a wall, but nothing about it is decorative only.

How heavy is it?

Approximately two pounds in the head, which is the general purpose weight most smiths reach for first. It is light enough for a long session and heavy enough to move stock.

Why is the handle steel rather than all wood?

Because a forged steel shank through the eye cannot break at the neck, which is where wooden handles fail. The ash grip over it gives you the shock absorption and the warmth in the hand that bare steel would not.

Can the face chip?

At 54 to 58 HRC it should not under normal work. It will chip if you strike hardened steel with it, so never hit another hammer face, a hardened die or a punch head that has been hardened.

Can I get my own name in runes on it?

Yes. Your line replaces the one shown rather than sitting beside it, and the shank is long enough for a name and a date comfortably.
