The Thornmaul is a turned hardwood bat wrapped with real barbed wire around the striking end. The wood is a single piece with a long taper from a slim handle out to a heavy barrel, finished dark and left with the grain showing through. A polished steel collar sits at the top of the handle carrying a band of engraved interlace, and the butt finishes in a turned knob. Five turns of galvanised barbed wire are wound and anchored around the barrel. A zip up carry case is included.

This is a display and collection piece and we will say that plainly at the top rather than bury it. It is a real bat with real barbed wire on it, which makes it dangerous to handle carelessly and useless as anything else. What it is genuinely good at is standing in a corner of a room, hanging on a wall, or going on a shelf in a collection where the wire catches the light. Every one is turned, collared, wired and finished by hand by hand in the Czech Republic, and each comes with the carry case shown and our lifetime warranty against defects in the turning, the collar and the fittings.

Specifications

Why the grain has to run straight

A bat is one of the few wooden objects where the grain direction is not a detail, it is the whole engineering problem. Wood is far stronger along the grain than across it, so a bat turned from a blank whose grain runs out at an angle has a built in shear line, usually somewhere in the handle where the section is thinnest and the bending load is highest. That is exactly where bats break.

We select blanks with the grain running true from knob to barrel and turn to the grain rather than to a template alone. It is why we do not use laminated or finger jointed stock. A glue line down the length of a bat is a plane of weakness sitting exactly where you do not want one.

The traditional choice for bats was ash, because ash has a long straight open grain and it flexes rather than shattering. Maple came later and is denser and harder but breaks in a different and more dramatic way. Hickory was the original and is heavier than either. All three are ring porous hardwoods, meaning the growth rings show as clear alternating bands, which is why an oiled bat has that stripey look along its length. The dark finish here lets those bands show as shadow rather than as colour.

Wire, collar and case

The wire is standard galvanised double strand barbed wire, wound in even turns around the barrel and anchored so that it cannot spin loose or slide down the taper. Galvanising is a zinc coating and it slows corrosion but does not stop it, so the wire will develop a dull grey bloom and then, over years in a damp room, spots of orange. Plenty of owners want exactly that and let it happen. If you would rather it stayed bright, a wipe of oil once a year on the wire keeps it where it is.

The steel collar at the top of the handle is not decoration alone. It sits at the transition from handle to barrel and puts a hard band around the section that carries the most bending stress. The interlace engraved into it is cut rather than printed and you can feel it under a fingertip.

The case is a soft zip up sleeve. It exists mainly so that the wire does not catch on doorframes, car seats and other people while the bat is being moved. Keep the bat in it when it is not on display.

Display and handling

On a wall, two hooks work better than one. Put one just under the knob and one just below the collar, so the weight of the barrel is carried by the hooks rather than by the wire. Never hang it by the barbed wire itself, because the wire is anchored for winding load, not for hanging a heavy barrel off one turn.

Standing it in a corner is fine and it is how most owners keep them. If you have children or dogs in the house, put it high or keep it in the case, because barbed wire at knee height in a hallway is exactly the accident you would expect.

Handle it by the handle below the collar and wear a glove if you are going to move it around. The barbs are sharp and they are meant to be. This is a display and collection piece, not a sports bat and not a weapon we would ever suggest anyone use as one.

Care

Give the wood a wipe with boiled linseed oil or a hard paste wax once or twice a year and it will darken slowly and evenly. Do not varnish or lacquer it. A hard film finish looks glossy for a year and then chips at the edges where the wire crosses the wood, and it cannot be spot repaired the way an oil finish can.

Keep it out of direct sun, which will bleach one side of a dark finish and leave the other alone. Keep it off a damp concrete floor, since end grain draws moisture straight up out of concrete. The steel collar takes a soft cloth and a little metal polish. If you want to hold the wire where it is, a light oil once a year is enough. If you want it to age, do nothing.

Made in the Czech Republic

This is a handmade piece from the Czech Republic, made in a workshop that still forges, grinds and finishes by hand instead of stamping parts out. The smiths there have kept the older way of working, and the wood, horn and leather are shaped and fitted by hand as well. Two pieces of the same design will never be identical, and that is part of what you are buying.

A note on handmade variation

This is hand made and not machine made or bulk produced, so what arrives will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph. Wood is a natural material and no two blanks carry the same grain, so the striping, the figure and the way the dark finish sits in the pores will be different on yours. The exact spacing of the wire turns, the position of the barbs, the depth of the interlace on the collar and the profile of the taper all vary because a person turned and wound each one. The length, the materials and the build are the same every time. The character is not.

Is the barbed wire real

Yes. It is standard galvanised double strand barbed wire with real barbs. Treat it accordingly and wear a glove when you move the bat.

Is this a usable baseball bat

No. It is a display and collection piece. The wire makes it unusable for any sporting purpose and we do not sell it as a weapon.

Can I take the wire off

You could, with wire cutters and heavy gloves, and you would be left with a plain turned bat with anchor marks on the barrel. We would not recommend it and it is not covered by the warranty.

What wood is it

A turned hardwood, darkened and oiled. We describe the finish rather than name a single species because we work with what comes in with the straightest grain, and grain is what matters on a bat.

Will the wire rust

The galvanising slows it. Over years in a damp room it will bloom grey and then spot orange. A wipe of oil once a year holds it where it is if you want it to stay bright.

How long until it ships

One to two weeks of processing plus transit. Free inside the United States. Engraved orders take a few days more.
