A wide, short, symmetrical blade like this is one of the oldest patterns in Europe. The Roman legionary carried the pugio, a broad leaf shaped dagger of roughly this length with a raised midrib running down the centre, issued alongside the gladius. Archaeologists pull them out of Rhine and Danube sites in numbers, often with elaborately inlaid handles, which tells you the same thing you can see in a knife shop today: a dagger has always been the piece a man spent money decorating. What a short dagger is really doing

Blade length changes what a dagger is for far more than most buyers expect. Past about six inches you are into a fighting or display piece that has to be worn on a belt and cannot be hidden. Under about four inches, the geometry stops being able to reach anything and it becomes ornamental. Four inches, which is where the Sandspire sits, is the length that historically got carried: short enough to disappear under a coat or into a boot top, long enough that the point actually does something.

Because the blade is short, the balance point matters more than on a long dagger. Put a heavy handle on a short blade and it rolls backwards in the grip. Put a light one on and the whole thing feels like a toy. The camel bone with Damascus bolsters is chosen for that reason: bone is moderately dense, the forged bolsters add mass right at the guard, and the balance ends up sitting almost exactly under the index finger. Pick it up and it does not want to twist.

The other feature of a short double edged blade is that both edges are usable at once. You can score with one edge on a forward stroke and the other on the return without turning the knife over, which is the practical reason double edges existed at all before they were a decorative choice.

Why Damascus and not stainless

The billet is built from alternating layers of 1095 high carbon and 15N20 nickel steel, forge welded, folded and drawn down before the blade is cut from it, then hardened to 58 to 60 HRC. That is why the pattern follows the grind instead of running flat across it, and why it shows on all four bevels of a dagger where a printed finish would show on none of them.

Set against stainless, the case is about hardness and edge. This steel is harder than the stainless in a supermarket knife, so it takes a finer edge and keeps it through more work. In exchange it is not corrosion proof and it wants a wipe of oil now and then, particularly on a short blade that spends time in a pocket or a sheath. Camel bone, and how it differs from horn

Camel bone is shaped from dense leg bone, cleaned, stabilised and polished by hand. It behaves differently from horn even though the two get lumped together. Horn is keratin, the same material as a fingernail, so it is slightly flexible, translucent at the edges and darkens with handling. Bone is mineral, so it is harder, more brittle, opaque and takes a bright polish that horn cannot match. It is also porous enough to accept dye, which is why bone handles come in colours that no animal ever grew.

What that means for you is that the streaking, colour and depth of your handle will shift from the photograph. Bone is naturally marked by the vascular structure of the animal, and no two blanks cut from the same bone are identical. Care is simple: keep it out of long soaking and away from direct heat, and give it the same light annual coat of oil you would give a timber handle. Care and sharpening

Two rules cover the steel. Dry it, and oil it. Do those and the pattern stays crisp and the edge comes back in minutes on a stone. A short dagger is quick work to sharpen because there is so little edge, but keep both sides even or you will pull the point off the centreline. Do the same number of passes on each bevel and check the tip against the light every so often.

Made in the Czech Republic

This piece is made by hand in the Czech Republic, in a workshop that still works the old way. The steel is forged, ground, heat treated and finished by smiths who learned the trade from the people before them, and the wood, horn and leather are cut and fitted by hand rather than pressed out on a line. That is also why no two pieces come out exactly the same.

A note on handmade variation

The Sandspire is hand forged. It is not machine made and it is not bulk produced, so what arrives will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph. The Damascus figure differs on every blade because the billet does not fold the same way twice, the camel bone carries the marking of the animal it came from, and the profile shifts by fractions because a person ground it. The dimensions, the steel and the build are the same every time. The character is not.

Frequently asked questions

Is a four inch dagger big enough to be useful

For a collector or display piece, yes, and it is the size that gets handled most because it is comfortable to pick up. For heavy cutting work you want a single edged knife with a belly instead.

Can camel bone be dyed or coloured to order

We work it natural. Bone takes dye well, but a natural finish shows the marbling that makes each handle different, so that is what we ship.

Is the tang full length through the handle

Yes. The tang runs the length of the grip with the bone fitted around it and the bolsters set at the front, which is what stops a short handle working loose.

What is the difference between this and the Olivespire

Same steel, same double edged geometry. The Olivespire is longer at 10 inches with a 5.5 inch blade and an olive wood grip. The Sandspire is the compact version in bone.

Can I get it engraved on the bone rather than the blade

Yes, and bone is the better surface of the two for a longer inscription. Choose handle in the engraving option and we will cut it there.

Does it come sharp

It ships with both edges honed. Treat the point with respect when you unwrap it.
