A fixed blade knife with a sheath is the plainest thing in the catalogue and the one most people should buy first. No pivot, no lock, no spring to fail. The blade runs through the handle, the handle is pinned to it, and the sheath is what makes the whole arrangement safe to carry. Buying a fixed blade without a sheath is buying half a knife, which is why every one on this tag ships with cowhide.
Sizes, steels and tang
Blades here sit mainly at 4, 5, 7 and 8 inches, with overall lengths from about 8 inches to 13. Steel is mostly Damascus of 1095 and 15N20, forge welded and acid etched at 58 to 60 HRC, with plain 1095 high carbon at 54 to 58 HRC and a few in D2. The patterns cover skinners, drop point hunters, daggers, chef knives, cleavers, karambits and bowies. Handles are stag horn, wood, rosewood, buffalo horn, bone and resin, usually with a bolster and spacers. The sheaths are stitched cowhide, cut for the blade they ship with, so a knife swapped into a generic pouch will always sit worse than it does in its own.
Wearing it
Most of the sheaths take a belt of normal width and sit vertically on the hip. A knife riding there is out of the way when you sit down, which a horizontal carry is not. Leather stretches slightly to the blade over the first few weeks and then holds. If it ever goes slack, a light wipe of leather dressing and a day of drying with the knife in place will bring the fit back.
Why the fixed blade wins outdoors
Strength is the short answer. A full tang blade takes lateral load, batoning and prying abuse that will eventually kill a folder, and it cleans faster because there is no pivot to trap blood or fat. The tradeoff is carry. A fixed blade lives on a belt, not in a pocket, and the rules on that vary by state, which the knife laws guide sets out plainly. If you want the reasoning on tang construction rather than the marketing, the full tang comparison is worth five minutes. For the knives themselves, the hunting knives cover field patterns and the Damascus knives cover the pattern welded end of the range.
