A Damascus pocket knife is a folder with a pattern welded blade. It is the piece most people buy first, because it is the one that gets carried instead of admired, and because a folded blade in a pocket is legal in far more places than anything on a belt.
Sizes and materials
Blades on this tag run 2.75, 3, 3.3, 3.5 and 4 inches, with open lengths from about 6.5 to 9 inches. That is the whole useful range for a pocket folder. Under 3 inches is a gentleman’s knife for letters, string and fruit. At 4 inches it will do most camp jobs and stop being invisible in a trouser pocket. Steel is Damascus of 1095 and 15N20, forge welded and acid etched, at 58 to 60 HRC, with a couple of stainless folders for people who would rather not think about rust. Scales are stag horn, natural bone, camel bone, buffalo horn, olive wood, pakka wood and stabilized resin, usually with a brass or stag bolster and mosaic pins. Most ship with a small cowhide slip sheath.
Carrying one without regretting it
These are slip joint and lock back folders rather than one hand flippers, so they open deliberately and close the same way. Keep the pivot free of pocket lint and put a drop of light oil on it two or three times a year. Carbon steel Damascus will patina in a pocket from sweat and fruit acid, which darkens the pattern rather than hiding it, and standing water is the only real enemy. The Damascus care notes cover oiling and rust without overcomplicating it. Blade length limits for carry vary by state, so check the knife laws summary before you pick a size. For a straight comparison of the folders worth carrying, read the everyday carry buyer notes, then browse the folding pocket knives.
Slip joint, not a flipper
These open with two hands and close the same way, which is slower than a modern flipper and considerably less likely to end badly in a pocket. The backspring holds the blade shut and holds it open. If a knife ever feels loose at the pivot, a light tightening and a drop of oil is the whole repair. Nothing here needs a torque wrench and a forum thread.
