A deer skinning knife is a short blade with a lot of belly. The curve is the point of it. You are not stabbing anything, you are running an edge along a hide with the tip kept away from the meat, and a long straight blade fights you the whole way. Anyone who has tried to cape a deer with a bowie knows why the skinner exists.
What the shape does
Blades on this tag concentrate at 3, 3.5, 4 and 5 inches, which is where a skinner belongs, with overall lengths around 6.5 to 10 inches. A few larger camp and bowie patterns sit on the tag as well for people who want one knife to do everything. Steel is mostly Damascus of 1095 and 15N20, forge welded and acid etched at 58 to 60 HRC. Plain 1095 high carbon at 54 to 58 HRC is the other house option and it is the easier one to touch up on a stone with cold hands. Handles are wood, stag horn, rosewood, walnut, buffalo horn and ram horn, and several patterns add a finger guard because wet hands slide. Several also drop the point slightly so the tip stays clear of the gut wall while the belly does the work. Every fixed blade ships in a stitched cowhide sheath.
Using it and keeping it
Work with the edge angled away from the carcass, let the belly do the cutting, and stop to strop rather than pushing a dull blade through hide. Carbon steel will stain from blood and it will rust if you leave it wet overnight, so wash, dry and oil the same evening. The skinning walkthrough covers the sequence, and the skinning knife notes compare blade shapes for the job. If you also want a gut hook on the spine, the gut hook explainer says when it helps and when it just snags. The knives are in the Damascus skinner knives.
One knife or two
Plenty of hunters carry a skinner and a smaller caping blade rather than one compromise. The skinner takes the hide off, the small blade works around the head and the joints. If you are only carrying one, take the 4 inch. It will cape adequately and skin well, whereas a 6 inch will skin beautifully and cape badly.
