A display helmet is bought for a shelf, a stand or a wall rather than for a field. That changes what matters. Fit still counts if you ever intend to wear it, but the finish, the silhouette and the detail work are what you will actually look at every day. These are real riveted steel helmets rather than resin props, which is why they hold up to a close look.
What is on the shelf
Steel is mild steel at 16 or 18 gauge. The Roman group covers an imperial gallic helmet with brass trim, a horsehair crest and hinged cheek guards, a cavalry helm with a Greek key brow band, pierced ear discs and a crest holder, and a gladiator helmet in the murmillo pattern with brass grille eye discs and a wide neck guard. The Greek pieces are a hand raised brass Corinthian in the full face hoplite pattern with an engraved meander brow band, and a steel Corinthian with a hammered crown and a bronze tone finish. The medieval end brings two great helms with brass cross reinforces, one blackened with rune cross vision slits and drilled breaths, a sallet with hinged temple pivots, a swept rear tail and a chased vegvisir, a pig faced bascinet with a hounskull visor and brass hinges, and a polished full head helmet with a T shaped visor slot and a padded leather liner. The Norse side has a Sutton Hoo style full face mask with brass crest eyebrows and embossed panels, and a horned helmet with real horns, which is pure theatre. Two kabuto complete the set. Mounting and accuracy
Support a helmet from inside rather than hanging it by the liner, and keep it out of direct sun if it has leather in it. Our notes on display cover stands and fixings.
