The Everrune is a six millimetre Viking rune ring with a flat brushed centre panel carrying a line of Elder Futhark, framed top and bottom by a polished bevel that catches the light and throws the runes into relief. The inside is rounded rather than square edged so it slides on cleanly and does not bite when your hands swell in the heat. It arrives in a soft grey pouch.

Runes were not primarily a magical alphabet, whatever the modern jewellery trade suggests. They were writing, and most surviving inscriptions are exactly as mundane as writing usually is. Ownership marks, names, memorial texts, and a fair amount of graffiti. There is a runestick from Bergen that translates roughly as a man complaining that his companion should come home, and another that says nothing more elevated than a trader’s name. Putting a name on a ring in runes is not a modern invention, it is the single most common thing anyone ever did with them. Elder Futhark, and why it is not the Viking alphabet

This ring carries Elder Futhark, and it is worth understanding what that means, because most people buying Norse jewellery assume there is only one set of runes.

Elder Futhark is the older system, in use from roughly the second century to the eighth across Germanic speaking Europe. It has twenty four characters, arranged in three groups of eight called aettir, and the name comes from the sound values of its first six letters, f u th a r k. Each rune also had a name that was itself a word. Fehu means cattle and by extension wealth. Uruz is the aurochs. Thurisaz is a giant or a thorn. That is why runes carry more weight than plain letters do, because every character is also a noun.

Here is the part that gets left out. By the Viking age proper, from about 800 onward, Scandinavians had stopped using Elder Futhark. They used Younger Futhark, which had been cut down to sixteen characters even though the language had more sounds than that, so a single rune had to cover several sounds at once. It is a genuinely awkward system to read and a worse one to transliterate a modern name into.

So there is an honest trade. Younger Futhark is what an actual Viking would have carved. Elder Futhark, with its full twenty four characters, maps far more cleanly onto a modern name and produces something a reader can decode. We use Elder for engraving because it works, and we will happily cut Younger Futhark instead if historical accuracy matters more to you than legibility. Just say so.

The band, the finish and the profile

The band is a solid silver tone metal, hard enough to be worn daily without deforming, brushed across the centre and polished at the bevels. It is not sterling silver and we do not describe it as such, because sterling is deliberately soft and a sterling band this thin would go oval within a year of heavy use. The finish is doing real work. A brushed panel scatters light while a polished bevel reflects it, and cutting the runes into the brushed area means the engraved strokes stay dark and readable rather than disappearing in shine. That contrast holds up as the ring wears, because the brushed panel is recessed slightly below the bevels and is therefore the part that touches things least.

Inside, the ring is a comfort fit, meaning the interior is domed rather than flat. A flat interior grips the finger along its full width and drags on the knuckle. A domed one contacts across a narrower band, slides over the knuckle easily, and traps less moisture underneath.

Fit and sizing

Get this right before you order, because a ring with engraving cut around it cannot be resized without cutting through the runes. We can only remake, not resize, a personalised band.

The reliable method is a proper sizing tool or a jeweller’s mandrel. If you are measuring at home, wrap a strip of paper round the base of the finger, mark where it overlaps, and measure the length in millimetres. That number is your circumference. A US size 9 is about 59mm, a size 10 about 61.6mm, and each full size is roughly 2.6mm of circumference.

Two things skew the result. First, measure at the end of the day and in a warm room, because fingers are smallest first thing in the morning and in the cold. Second, a band has to pass the knuckle, so if your knuckle is noticeably larger than the base of your finger, size to the knuckle and accept a slightly loose fit below it.

A comfort fit profile like this one tends to run about a quarter size larger than a flat interior band of the same nominal size, so if you are between sizes and coming from a flat ring, take the smaller of the two.

Care

This is a hard wearing band and it needs very little. Wash it with warm water and a drop of washing up liquid, dry it, and that is normally enough. The brushed panel will slowly pick up fine scratches from daily wear, which is what a brushed finish is supposed to do, and it can be refreshed with a grey abrasive pad worked in one direction along the panel rather than across it. Do not use a silver dip. Take it off for weightlifting, gardening and any work with hand tools, because a ring caught on something is the one real hazard of wearing one. Store it in its pouch rather than loose in a pocket with keys.

A note on handmade variation

This is hand made, not machine made or bulk produced, so what arrives will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph. The brushed panel is worked by hand, so the direction and depth of the grain vary slightly from ring to ring. Engraved runes are cut individually and the spacing adapts to how many characters your text needs, so a long name sits differently from a short one. The dimensions, the material and the build are the same every time. The character is not.

Is this sterling silver

No. It is a solid silver tone band chosen for hardness rather than softness, because it is meant to be worn every day. Sterling and gold versions can be quoted.

Can it be resized later

A plain band can be resized by a jeweller. An engraved one cannot, because resizing cuts through the rune line. Measure carefully before ordering a personalised ring.

How do I work out my size

Measure the circumference of the finger with a paper strip in millimetres at the end of a warm day, and size to your knuckle if it is larger than the finger base.

What do the runes on the stock ring say

It is a fixed Elder Futhark sequence used as a house pattern. Order with custom engraving and your own text replaces it.

Will it tarnish or turn my finger green

It should not do either. It is a hard silver tone metal rather than a copper alloy, and it holds its colour with nothing more than soap and water.

Can I have Younger Futhark instead

Yes. Ask in the order notes. Younger Futhark is what Viking age Scandinavians actually used, though it is harder to read back as a modern name.
