The Amberdraught is a pale ox horn, honey coloured and translucent enough to hold light at the tip, banded at the mouth in solid brass and engraved with a Valknut on the outer face. It comes with a turned oak stand that carries the horn in a ring on a pedestal with a beaded foot, and with a tan leather belt and brass buckle so it can also be worn.

The horn was the centre of a piece of Norse social machinery that had a name. The sumbel was a formal drinking round in the hall, where a filled vessel was carried round and each person in turn made a toast, a boast or an oath over it before drinking and passing it on. Beowulf describes the queen carrying the cup round the hall in exactly that order of precedence, and the Norse sources use the word minni for the memorial toasts drunk to gods and to the dead. A horn that has to be passed because it cannot be set down is not a design failure. It is the mechanism that made the round work. Ours is made and finished in Memphis, Tennessee.

Drinking from a horn without wearing it

Everyone gets this wrong the first time. A horn is not a glass and it does not empty like one. The bore narrows steadily from the mouth to the tip, so the liquid at the bottom sits in a very small cross section and arrives far faster than you expect once the horn passes about forty five degrees. Tip a horn the way you would tip a pint and the last third comes at you all at once.

The technique is to raise it slowly and keep your chin coming up with it rather than tilting the horn on its own. Take short pulls. When it feels nearly empty, stop and look, because it usually has more in it than it feels like. Fill it two thirds rather than to the brim if you are going to carry it, since a horn has no lid and the mouth is wide.

The Valknut sits on the outer face where it reads to the room when the horn is raised. That is the position these marks take on historical drinking vessels too, on the side that faces outward from the drinker, because the point of a marked cup in a hall was that everyone else could see it.

The horn, the brass and the oak

This horn came off a pale animal and nothing has been done to lighten it. The cream and honey banding is the natural layering of the keratin, and where the wall thins toward the tip you can hold it to a window and see light through it. That translucency is the single hardest thing to photograph and the first thing people notice in the hand.

Preparation is the usual slow business. The soft core is removed, the interior is scraped down to clean hard keratin, then boiled and washed until the smell that ruins a cheap horn is gone at the source rather than covered over, sanded smooth and sealed with a food safe interior coating that neither melts nor cracks.

The rim band is solid brass rather than plated, fitted to the mouth to protect the thinnest part of the wall and to give a clean edge to drink from. Brass tones warmer with use, which suits a pale horn better than steel does. The stand is oak, turned on the lathe as a ring, a waisted pedestal and a beaded foot, then oiled rather than lacquered so it can be fed and repaired rather than chipped and stripped. The belt is tan leather with a solid brass buckle and hand burnished edges.

Fit and sizing

Two things need sizing here and the horn is not one of them. The belt is cut to a waist measurement, so measure over the clothes you actually wear it with, through the belt loops, and give us that number in the order notes. If you do not give us a size we will send a standard length that can be trimmed and re punched, which is easy to do at home with a punch and a sharp knife.

The stand needs a flat surface and a little care on first use. Set the ring down, drop the horn through it and let the belly find its seat before you let go. The horn sits at an angle in a ring stand rather than upright, so leave room on the table for the tip to swing behind. Check the beaded foot is not rocking before you load it, and put a felt pad under it if you are setting it on a polished surface.

If you want to wear the horn rather than stand it, thread the belt through and hang the horn from a separate leather loop. The belt supplied here is a belt rather than a hanger, so tell us if you would like a matching hanger made at the same time.

Care

Wash the horn by hand in warm water with a little mild soap, rinse and stand it mouth down to drain. Never put it in a dishwasher. A dishwasher cycle lifts the interior seal, clouds the polish and can split the wall, and a split horn cannot be repaired. Do not leave a drink standing in it overnight and do not use it for anything boiling hot.

Pale horn shows a mark more readily than dark horn does, so wipe it dry rather than leaving it to air spot. A small amount of food safe mineral oil worked in every few months keeps the surface from drying and brings back the depth in the translucent areas. Keep it out of direct sun. Wipe the brass with a dry cloth and let it tone, or bring it back with a touch of metal polish if you prefer it bright. Re oil the oak stand once a year with the grain, and feed the leather belt with a balm.

The horn is selected, cored, boiled, sanded, sealed, banded and engraved in our shop in Memphis, Tennessee, the stand is turned on our lathe and the belt is cut, punched and burnished on our bench. Nothing here is drop shipped from an importer catalogue with a Norse label added. Because pale horns of this quality have to be picked out individually, allow one to two weeks of processing before yours ships. Shipping inside the United States is free, returns run for seven days, and the set carries our lifetime warranty against defects in the fittings and the build, with no end date and no receipt needed.

A note on handmade variation

This is hand made rather than machine made or bulk produced, so what arrives will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph. Every horn differs in colour, curve and translucency, and pale horns vary more than dark ones do, so yours may be creamier, more golden or streaked with grey through the belly. The oak has its own grain and the engraved Valknut is cut one at a time and will sit a little differently on the curve. The capacity, the seal, the fittings and the build are the same every time. The character is not.

The brass band will slowly tone to a warmer colour with handling. That is normal and it can be polished back if you prefer it bright.

Will mine be as pale as the photograph

Horn colour is natural and varies. We pick pale horns for this piece, but yours may be creamier or more golden and may carry grey streaking. Tell us if you have a strong preference.
