A Viking sword scabbard is the part people forget until the sword arrives. A bare blade has nowhere to live, cannot be moved safely and will pick up marks against anything it leans on. The Norse solution was a wooden core, lined and covered, with fittings at the throat and the chape. This page gathers the swords in the range that come with their own, so what turns up is a complete piece rather than half of one.
Blades and the scabbards on them
The swords run 24 to 40 inches overall with blades between 18 and 33 inches, so the covers range from something you can hang indoors to a full length rig. One ships with both a fitted scabbard and a belt, which is the only one here ready to wear straight out of the box. Two carry turned olive burl wooden scabbards, one paired with an olive wood handle and one with rosewood and a Damascus bolster. Another has brass fittings on the scabbard and a cord wrapped grip. On the blades themselves you get Ulfberht style pieces in both plain and Damascus steel, a Carolingian pattern, an eleventh century form, a broadsword, a blackened warrior sword and one with a valknut engraved guard and blackened fittings. Steel is plain 1095 high carbon at 54 to 58 HRC or forge welded 1095 and 15N20 Damascus at 58 to 60 HRC, with a few stainless display pieces among them. Prices run from 289 dollars to 575 dollars.
Storing a sword properly
Leather and wood hold moisture, so a carbon steel blade should not live sealed in its cover for months at a time. Take it out, wipe it, oil it and put it back. Where the sword hangs matters as much: our notes on displaying swords and axes cover mounts, angles and the mistakes that leave marks. Replacement and spare covers are in scabbards and sheaths, and the full range of Norse blades is in Viking swords. If the Ulfberht name on two of these is new to you, the story behind it is worth ten minutes.
