The Thornhelm is a complete Viking sword with scabbard and belt, sold as a wearing set rather than a bare blade. The sword is 36 inches overall with a 30 inch fullered blade in high carbon steel, a short straight guard and a lobed steel pommel, and it comes in a fitted brown leather scabbard on a full leather waist belt with a cast buckle and a suspension loop. The scabbard is the part most people underestimate. Excavated Norse scabbards were not simple leather tubes. They were built from two thin laths of wood shaped to the blade, bound and covered in leather or linen, and the inside was very often lined with sheepskin left with the fleece on and turned inward. That lining was not padding. The lanolin still in unwashed wool is mildly water repellent and leaves a greasy film on anything stored in it, which meant a sword drawn from a fleece lined scabbard came out already oiled. Norse smiths worked out the correct storage solution for high carbon steel a thousand years before anyone wrote down the chemistry. The set is forged and finished by hand by hand in the Czech Republic. The blade is hammered out, hand fullered, hardened and tempered here, the hilt is fitted and peened, and the scabbard is built over a shaped wooden core, wet formed to the blade and stitched by hand before the belt and fittings go on. Specifications

How the scabbard and belt are built, and how a Viking wore one

The scabbard starts as two thin slats of wood, each hollowed to half the section of this specific blade, so it fits this sword rather than swords in general. They are glued and bound at the seams, the throat is shaped to close on the guard with a slight friction fit, and the whole body is covered in wet formed leather that shrinks tight as it dries and is stitched along the back edge. A steel throat protects the mouth where the blade goes in and out, and a chape closes the tip so the point cannot work through the leather over time. Left as bare leather with no core, a scabbard collapses, holds the blade loosely and eventually cuts through itself. The wooden core is the whole reason a historical scabbard worked.

Suspension is the second half of the question. Norse art and grave finds show swords carried both from a waist belt and from a baldric over the right shoulder, hanging on the left hip at a shallow angle rather than vertically. Vertical hanging looks tidy in a photograph and is impractical in life, because a three foot scabbard hung straight down catches on everything and cannot be drawn cleanly without lifting the whole thing. The belt supplied here uses a suspension loop that lets you set the hang angle where you want it, and the belt itself is long enough to wear over a tunic or a coat with room to spare.

One historical note worth repeating: do not store the sword in the scabbard long term unless you are prepared to oil it regularly. The lanolin trick worked because a Viking handled his sword constantly. A modern leather scabbard left closed on a dry blade in a humid house will trap moisture and the tanning salts in the leather will pit the steel over a season.

Why high carbon steel and not stainless

1095 is a plain, clean, high carbon steel. It hardens through, takes an edge, and at 54 to 58 HRC it will bend under a load and spring back rather than break. Stainless steel achieves its rust resistance with a heavy chromium content, and in a section as long as a sword blade that chromium encourages coarse carbides and brittle behaviour, which is why long stainless blades are display items and why the cheap ones sometimes fail at the tang. Carbon steel asks for a wipe and a film of oil in exchange for behaving like a real blade, and it will take a patina over the years, which most owners come to prefer. The grip and the fittings

The grip is a shaped hardwood core, waisted so the hand indexes the edge alignment without looking, with cord risers bound under the leather to give positive stops for the fingers. The wrap is brown leather to match the scabbard and belt, wet fitted so it dries tight, stitched along the back edge away from the palm. The steel guard and lobed pommel are filed and polished by hand and the tang is peened over the pommel button, which locks the assembly mechanically rather than with glue.

There is wood under the grip leather and wood inside the scabbard, so treat both as wood. Keep them out of standing water, out of hot cars and away from radiators, wipe rather than wash, and let anything damp dry at room temperature rather than with heat. Care and sharpening

Wipe the blade after handling and keep a film of oil on it, because skin oils are mildly acidic and will mark a polished surface within days in a humid room. Store the sword out of the scabbard for anything longer than a few weeks, on a rack or wall mount with the scabbard beside it. The leather wants its own care: a light dressing occasionally, and no drying it near heat if it gets wet. Sharpening is ordinary high carbon work over a longer edge. Support the blade, work in overlapping sections along a coarse stone and then a fine one at a steady angle, and finish on a strop. Made in the Czech Republic

This piece is made by hand in the Czech Republic, in a workshop that still works the old way. The steel is forged, ground, heat treated and finished by smiths who learned the trade from the people before them, and the wood, horn and leather are cut and fitted by hand rather than pressed out on a line. That is also why no two pieces come out exactly the same.

A note on handmade variation

This set is hand forged. It is not machine made and it is not bulk produced, so what arrives will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph on this page. Leather is a natural material and takes dye differently from hide to hide, so the exact brown of the scabbard, grip and belt varies. So does the grain of the wood under the wrap, the way light runs along the hand ground fuller, the file finish on the steel and the precise stitch spacing on the scabbard seam. What does not vary is the specification: the steel, the heat treatment, the dimensions, the construction method and the finish standard are identical every time. The character is what changes, and that is what a hand built rig is for.

Frequently asked questions

Does the belt actually fit and can I wear the whole thing?

Yes. It is a working full grain leather waist belt with a cast buckle, sized to fit up to a 44 inch waist over a tunic or coat, and the scabbard hangs from a suspension loop you can set at the angle you prefer. It is intended to be worn, not just displayed.

Is the sword sharp?

Yes, it comes with a hand honed working edge. If you are buying this to wear at an event, a market or a wedding, say so in the order notes and we will supply it with a rounded display edge at no extra cost, which is usually what venue rules require.

Can I leave the sword in the scabbard?

For a few weeks, yes, provided the blade is oiled. For months, no. Leather holds moisture and tanning salts and both will pit a high carbon blade over time. Store the sword on a rack with the scabbard next to it and sheathe it when you are wearing it.
