Every historical shield worth the name was wood. Planks glued edge to edge, faced with hide or linen, rimmed with rawhide and centred on an iron boss. Wood splits along the grain rather than shattering, which means it absorbs a blow and keeps working, and it is light enough to hold up for an entire day.
Round, kite and heater
Stormwheel is the round board, twenty four inches across, painted as a navy and white pinwheel with a steel boss and an Elder Futhark rune ring. The kites are taller. Crossmarch and Palecross are both Templar boards with a red cross pattee, one on black and white with an engraved gilt border and the other on white with a rawhide bound edge. Palewing stands forty inches, per pale black and white with an engraved knotwork panel and a riveted rawhide rim, and Wavewarden is a thirty four inch teardrop with painted bands and a full strap set. On the heater side, Lionward is thirty inches tall with a painted rampant lion, and Quarterfell is quartered navy and white.
They sit in Viking shields, with the Norse boards in round shields and the tall ones in kite shields and bucklers.
