A hand forged camping knife is the one blade you carry when you are only carrying one. It splits kindling, opens packets, cuts cord, takes the skin off a rabbit and gets used as a screwdriver by people who should know better. The phrase means a knife made under a hammer rather than punched out of bar stock, which shows up as a slightly thicker spine, a visible grind and a handle shaped to a hand instead of a machine.

Damascus of 1095 and 15N20 dominates here, forge welded and acid etched, hardened to 58 to 60 HRC. Plain 1095 high carbon at 54 to 58 HRC turns up on the seax and skinner patterns, and it is the easier steel to bring back with a stone at the end of a wet week. Blade lengths cluster at 3.5, 4, 5 and 7 inches, with overall lengths from about 6.5 inches for a pocket size camp knife to 12 for a full bowie. Handles are wood, rosewood, stag horn, walnut, buffalo horn and stacked leather. Every fixed blade comes with a cowhide sheath, which matters more than people expect on a camping knife, since the alternative is a loose blade in a pack.
Forged, not stamped
Hand forging moves the steel rather than grinding it away. On a camp knife that shows up as a spine you can rest a thumb on, a taper toward the tip, and hammer marks left visible on some of the seax and skinner patterns. It also means small differences between two knives of the same model, which is either charm or an annoyance depending on your temperament.
Choosing one that suits the trip
Short blades around 4 inches do food and cord and stay legal in more places. Blades at 7 or 8 inches chop and baton but are heavy on a belt all day. If you are picking between shapes, the blade shapes guide explains why a drop point behaves differently from a clip point in the same hand. Carbon steel wants drying and a wipe of oil after a damp night out, which the knife care guide covers without turning it into a religion. Browse the Damascus knives for pattern welded camp blades, or the hunting knives if the same knife has to field dress an animal on the way home.
