A hand forged spearhead is made the awkward way. The blade is drawn out from a bar, then the tail is flattened, wrapped round a mandrel and welded into a cone so the head can slide onto a shaft and be riveted through. A cast or welded tube socket is quicker and weaker. This page is the range where that work has been done properly.
Heads, sockets and shafts
The loose heads come first: a Damascus head with winged lugs and a runed brass socket, and a 1095 head with knotwork engraving and a runed socket. Both are ready to haft. The complete spears run 60 to 76 inches overall on ash shafts, with leaf blades from 11 to 13 inches. One has a knotwork cut socket and a steel butt ferrule on a seven foot shaft, one a rune engraved socket on a 76 inch haft, one a riveted socket with a brass collar at 68 inches, one a brass valknut ferrule, one a brass butt spike at 60 inches, one a leather grip wrap at 74 inches, and one an Elder Futhark head at 72 inches with a red leather grip. The boar spears are the specialists: a winged Damascus head with a swept crossbar and a brass knotwork ferrule, a 13 inch lugged head on a 30 inch olive and walnut haft with a steel butt spike, and one with a curved steel crossbar and a riveted socket. Steel is plain 1095 high carbon at 54 to 58 HRC or forge welded 1095 and 15N20 Damascus at 58 to 60 HRC, and most ship with a leather head sheath. Prices run from 189 dollars to 429 dollars.
Sockets, lugs and shafts
The lugs behind the blade on the winged heads are not decoration. They stop the head burying itself past the point of usefulness, which matters on a boar spear more than anywhere else.
