An anniversary gift for a husband has to clear a low bar and a high one at the same time. It must not be socks, and it must not look like it was bought in a panic. A hand forged blade with a date cut into it manages both. It is a physical object with weight, it improves with use, and the engraving turns a catalogue item into something that only makes sense in one house.
What is here
This tag covers folding pocket knives, skinners, hunting knives, karambits, bowies and a few Viking axes. Steel is mostly Damascus of 1095 and 15N20, forge welded and acid etched at 58 to 60 HRC, with plain 1095 high carbon at 54 to 58 HRC across part of the range. Blades run from about 3 inches on a folder to 8 on a bowie, with overall lengths from roughly 6.5 inches to 13. Handles are stag horn, wood, rosewood, bone, resin and buffalo horn, frequently with brass or Damascus bolsters and fiber spacers. Fixed blades ship in a stitched cowhide sheath.
Weight, size and what gets used
Folders here open to about 6.5 to 9 inches and disappear into a pocket. Fixed blades at 10 to 13 inches overall want a belt and a reason. If he has a workshop, a garden or a truck, the bigger blade earns its keep. If he works at a desk, the folder is the one that gets picked up every day, and a gift that gets handled beats a gift that gets photographed.
What to put on it
A date is the obvious choice and the one that ages best. Initials work on a narrow bolster where a date will not fit. Text engraving is 19 dollars, a symbol is 39 dollars and a family crest is 49 dollars. Engraving is done in the US after arrival. If he already owns knives, an axe changes the shape of the gift entirely, and the Viking axes take engraving on the cheek of the head where it is actually visible. If he does not, a folder is the piece most likely to be carried daily rather than admired occasionally, and the folding pocket knives hold the Damascus and stag options. The wider engraved and personalized range includes drinking horns and pendants for years when a blade is not the answer, and the engraving page shows how much text a given surface will really take.
