A custom handmade axe means a head shaped under a hammer rather than dropped out of a die, hung on a haft that was fitted to it, and finished with whatever mark you asked for. Custom here does not mean designed from scratch. It means the piece is individual, the dimensions are the piece as measured, and the engraving is yours.
What is on this tag
Bearded axes, double headed axes, throwing patterns, a tomahawk and a seax or two. Overall lengths sit at 16, 18, 19, 20 and 22 inches. Heads are plain 1095 high carbon at 54 to 58 HRC or Damascus of 1095 and 15N20, forge welded and acid etched, at 58 to 60 HRC, with a couple in stainless. Hafts are rosewood, wood, olive wood, birch and ash, drifted and wedged rather than glued. Each ships with a leather blade cover.
Choosing the head before anything else
The head decides what the axe is. A bearded head has a hook at the lower rear of the edge that gives a long cutting edge on a light head and lets you choke up behind it for controlled work. A double headed axe is heavier, symmetrical and wants two hands. A throwing pattern is lighter and balanced to rotate rather than to chop. The bearded axe explainer covers why that shape lasted three centuries, and the choosing an axe guide works through head, haft and purpose in order.
What custom actually costs
Text on the cheek is 19 dollars, a symbol or rune line is 39 dollars and a family crest is 49 dollars, all done in the US after arrival. Keep the design bold, since cut lines fill with oil over the years and hairline work is the first thing to vanish. The axes are in the Viking axes and the full marked range in the engraved and personalized.
What variation means
Head weights differ slightly between pieces because the shaping is done under a hammer rather than in a die, and no two Damascus heads carry the same pattern. Hafts vary in grain and tone. Listed dimensions are the piece as measured rather than a machined specification, and anything outside a sensible tolerance does not get listed at all.
Hafts
Oil finished rather than lacquered, so they can be sanded back and refed after a few years instead of peeling into your palm. If a haft ever loosens it is rewedged rather than replaced.
