Viking cosplay has a harder job than most costume work, because the audience contains people who have read the excavation reports. The kit has to photograph well from ten feet and survive a close look from someone who knows what a seax spine should do. This archive is the middle ground: real forged blades and real steel helmets that still read clearly on a convention floor.
Kit that works on camera and up close
The belt knives are the backbone. Seven Viking seax knives sit here with olive wood, camel bone, engraved rosewood, plain wood, mosaic bone and brass bolstered handles, most in leather or cowhide sheaths, one sized for display and general outdoor use. Blades are plain 1095 high carbon at 54 to 58 HRC apart from one in forge welded 1095 and 15N20 Damascus at 58 to 60 HRC. For the head there is a handcrafted Norse helmet and a blackened 18 gauge steel horned helmet with a riveted brow band and Elder Futhark runes, which is pure theatre and knows it. The shield is a 24 inch plywood bodied Yggdrasil design built for a wall rather than a shieldwall. The swords run from a 24 inch piece with a wood handle up to a 38 inch Viking sword, plus a Damascus one at 35 inches with a rosewood handle, and an elven replica at 40 inches for anyone whose costume drifted. Prices run from 149 dollars to 390 dollars.
Getting the details right
Horns are the thing people will pick you up on. They come from nineteenth century opera rather than from any Norse grave, and the story is worth knowing before you wear a pair: the horned helmet myth lays it out. If you are building kit for an event rather than a photo shoot, our notes on gear for reenactors cover what actually gets used. Boards and bosses are in Viking shields, and the riveted steel is in Viking helmets.
