The Nightbriar is a long, straight, double edged fantasy longsword built on the lines of the high medieval knightly sword, with a narrow fuller running most of the blade and a line of engraved script cut along it. Inscribed blades are not a modern invention borrowed from film. Between roughly the ninth and eleventh centuries a whole group of northern European swords carried their maker’s name inlaid into the fuller in twisted iron wire, the famous Ulfberht blades among them, and archaeologists still argue about which were genuine and which were period copies trading on the reputation. The habit of writing on a blade is about a thousand years old. What changed is that the letters are now cut and darkened rather than hammered in as wire, so the line stays crisp and sits flush with the steel instead of standing proud of it. Specifications

The fuller, and why the inscription sits inside it

A fuller is the shallow groove ground down the centre of the blade, and it is one of the most misunderstood features on a sword. It is not a blood groove and it has nothing to do with suction. It is a stiffness trick. Steel resists bending most at the outer surfaces of a section and least in the middle, so metal removed from the centreline costs you very little rigidity while taking away real weight. A fullered blade of the same width and length as a flat one is lighter and moves faster, which on a sword this long is the difference between a piece that handles and a piece that feels like a crowbar.

That groove is also the safest place on the blade to put writing. It is flat, it is recessed below the plane of the flats so the etched line is protected from scuffs, and crucially it is well away from the edge bevels. Cutting or etching across a bevel puts a notch where the steel is thinnest and most highly stressed. On the Nightbriar the script is laid inside the fuller, darkened, and then the flats are polished around it, so the inscription reads clearly from across a room without weakening anything that matters.

Why 1095 and not stainless

Stainless steel earns its name from chromium, and chromium is what makes it a poor choice for a long blade. Above roughly twelve percent chromium the steel forms hard carbides that resist corrosion beautifully but interrupt the grain, and a long thin section made from it tends to be brittle in exactly the way a four foot sword must not be. 1095 is a spring steel. It was developed for leaf springs and torsion bars, parts whose entire job is to bend under load thousands of times and come back straight, and that is precisely the property you want in a blade this long. Tempered to the low fifties on the Rockwell C scale it takes a shock, flexes, and returns. It will develop a grey patina if you neglect it, which is a fair trade for a blade that does not snap. The grip and the way the sword balances

The handle is a shaped hardwood core, ribbed so the cord underneath raises regular ridges through the leather. Those ridges are functional. A smooth cylinder rolls in the hand under a cut, and a ribbed one indexes, so you always know which way the edge is pointing without looking. The core is glued and pinned to a full tang that runs the whole length of the grip and is peened over at the pommel, not screwed on, so there is no threaded joint to loosen with handling.

The tapered pommel is heavy enough to pull the balance point back to roughly four inches ahead of the guard. That is what stops a thirty five inch blade feeling nose heavy on the wall bracket and in the hand. Wood is a natural material and it moves with humidity, so keep the grip out of direct sun and away from radiators, and treat it occasionally as described in our notes on wooden handle care.

Care and sharpening

High carbon steel wants three things: dry air, a thin film of oil, and no fingerprints left sitting overnight. Sweat is mildly acidic and will etch a print into a polished flat within a day or two in a humid summer. Wipe the blade down with a soft cloth after handling and reapply a light mineral or camellia oil every few months, more often near the coast. Never store the sword long term inside the leather scabbard, because leather is tanned with salts that hold moisture against steel. Hang it on the wall and keep the scabbard beside it. Made in the Czech Republic

Every piece we sell is made by hand in the Czech Republic. The smiths there work the way the trade has been worked for a long time, heating and hammering the steel, taking the bevels down by eye, and fitting the handle and the leather one at a time. There is no automated line anywhere in it, so small differences from one piece to the next are normal and expected.

A note on handmade variation

This sword is hand forged. It is not machine made and it is not bulk produced, so what arrives will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph on this page. The grain of the wooden grip, the tone of the leather on the scabbard, the exact depth and darkness of the etched script and the precise profile of the blade tip all vary from one piece to the next, because each one is worked by hand from natural materials that were never identical to begin with. The dimensions, the steel, the heat treatment and the build are the same every time. The character is not, and that is the point of buying something a person made.

Frequently asked questions

Does it arrive sharp?

It ships with a display edge as standard, blunt enough to handle safely and to hang in a room with people moving past it. Ask for the sharpened option at checkout and we will put a working cutting edge on it before it leaves the shop.

Can it actually be used for cutting practice?

The blade is spring steel with a full tang and a peened pommel, so it is built as a functional sword rather than a wall hanger with a rat tail tang. It will handle tatami and water bottle cutting once sharpened. It is not intended for edge on edge sparring against another steel blade, which damages any sword regardless of who made it.

Can I have my own runes engraved instead of the script on the blade?

Yes. Use the rune converter above and your line replaces the existing inscription rather than being added next to it. There is one fuller and one line of work fits in it.

Will mine look exactly like the photograph?

No, and it should not. The dimensions and the steel match, but the leather tone, the wood grain and the exact patina of the etch are individual to each sword because each one is finished by hand.

What is the difference between this and an arming sword?

An arming sword is the shorter single handed blade of the same family, usually around thirty inches overall with a grip sized for one hand. This is a longsword: a longer blade and a grip long enough that the second hand can come onto the pommel for leverage. The longsword is the two handed development of the same design.

How long does shipping take?

Shipping within the United States is free. In stock swords leave Memphis in two to three business days and usually arrive within a week. Custom engraving adds two to three weeks to that.
