Features & Compatibility
The Trailhorn is what happens when a tracker knife is made by hand instead of stamped out. Damascus runs through the blade, buffalo horn sits at the grip, and the fit between them is something you can feel rather than read about. At 11 inches overall with a 6 inch blade and a 5 inch handle, it is the larger of our Damascus trackers, and that extra inch of blade is felt entirely in the chop. Why the profile is ground this way is explained in blade shapes explained.
There is a reason survival instructors keep coming back to this profile rather than to a plain bushcraft knife. A tracker gives up elegance to gain range. Instead of one edge geometry optimised for one job, it carries a heavy forward belly for impact work, a fine straight section for carving, and teeth on the spine for notching timber. Nothing on the blade is decorative. Every part of it exists because a person who is genuinely out in the woods with one tool has to chop, carve and notch with the same piece of steel.
Every Trailhorn is forged and finished in the Czech Republic and ships with a fitted leather sheath, free inside the United States.

Why a tracker chops better than a knife twice its size
Chopping is not about how long a blade is. It is about where the mass sits and how fast that mass is moving when it meets the wood. A long thin blade puts very little weight at the point of contact, which is why a fillet knife is useless against a branch no matter how sharp it is. A tracker solves the problem by pushing the deepest, heaviest part of the blade out toward the front third, so at the moment of impact the centre of percussion lands where the edge actually meets the timber.
That is why a 6 inch tracker will out chop an 8 inch straight blade of the same weight. The energy is concentrated rather than spread along the edge. It is also why the forward bevel on this knife is ground more obtusely than the straight section behind it. A thin, acute edge slices beautifully and rolls the first time it hits a knot. A thicker edge on the chopping zone survives impact, and you accept that it is a slightly worse slicer in exchange.
Two other details on the blade earn their keep in the field. The flat section of spine ahead of the saw teeth is left square edged, which means it will throw sparks off a ferrocerium rod cleanly, and it gives a baton a safe place to land that is not the teeth. And the concave belly between the chopping zone and the point works as a short draw knife when you pull the blade toward you with the handle locked against your thigh, which is the fastest way to strip bark or shave a spindle.
Why Damascus and not stainless
The blade is built from alternating 1095 and 15N20 layers, forge welded into one bar before the shape is cut from it and hardened to 58 to 60 HRC. Because the layers run through the steel, grinding reveals the pattern rather than removing it, and it shows up in the saw gullets as well as on the flats.
Against stainless, high carbon Damascus wins on hardness, edge retention and toughness under impact, which are the three things that matter on a chopping knife. Most stainless at this price is soft enough that a hard strike into seasoned oak will roll the edge over. The price you pay is rust, and on a tracker that lives in a pack that is a real cost, not a theoretical one. Dry it and oil it and it is a non issue. We set it out plainly in Damascus versus stainless, and 1095 and 15N20 explains why those two steels are the pairing that works.
Buffalo horn as a grip on an impact knife
Buffalo horn polishes to a depth that synthetics only imitate, and it warms in the hand within seconds, which matters on a cold morning far more than most people expect. Horn is keratin, the same material as a fingernail, and that gives it a property that is genuinely useful on a chopping knife: it is slightly resilient rather than rigid. It flexes microscopically under impact, so it damps the shock that travels back up the tang instead of transmitting it straight into the palm the way steel or hard resin does.
The trade offs are worth knowing. Horn does not like sustained soaking or direct heat, both of which can dry it and open a crack, so keep it out of a dishwasher and off a radiator. It also darkens and deepens with handling, which most owners come to like. Care is a light coat of oil once or twice a year, the same routine we use for timber and set out in wooden handle care. Because it comes from an animal, the colour, the banding and the translucency at the edges will differ from the photograph.
Engraving, runes and your own design
Use the rune converter on this page to turn a name, a date or a short phrase into Elder Futhark and we will cut it into the steel or the handle. If you would rather have a Viking pattern than a rune line, choose your own design in the engraving option above the add to cart button and tell us whether it goes on the blade or the handle. Where a piece already carries an engraved design, your chosen engraving replaces it rather than sitting alongside it. Buffalo horn engraves beautifully because the cut goes pale against the dark surface and needs no filling to read. Options are on the engraving page.
Care and sharpening
Damascus is carbon steel underneath the pattern, so treat it like carbon steel. Dry after use, thin film of oil before storage, and out of the sheath for long spells because vegetable tanned leather holds damp against a blade.
When you sharpen it, do not try to hold one angle down the whole edge. The chopping section is deliberately steeper than the carving section, so work them separately and blend where they meet. The saw teeth are restored with a small triangular file, never on a stone. Both jobs are covered in steel care and sharpening with a whetstone, and sheath upkeep is in leather sheath care.
Made in the Czech Republic
Every piece we sell is made by hand in the Czech Republic. The smiths there work the way the trade has been worked for a long time, heating and hammering the steel, taking the bevels down by eye, and fitting the handle and the leather one at a time. There is no automated line anywhere in it, so small differences from one piece to the next are normal and expected.
Ransack Viking is a United States company based in Chicago, Illinois. We bring the pieces in ourselves, inspect them on arrival and ship them from our own warehouse. If you add engraving, that is carried out here in the United States before your order goes out.
A note on handmade variation
This knife is hand forged, not machine made and not bulk produced, so what arrives will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph. The Damascus figure comes out of the billet differently every time, the buffalo horn carries the banding and tone of the animal it came from, the saw teeth are cut by hand and the grind shifts by fractions because a person made it. The dimensions, the steel and the build are the same every time. The character is not.
Frequently asked questions
Is it full tang
Yes. The tang runs the full length of the handle with the horn fitted to it, which is the only construction we would put behind a chopping edge.
Will it throw sparks off a ferro rod
Yes, off the square section of spine forward of the teeth. Do not use the sharpened edge for it, because it will dull the part of the knife you need most.
Is buffalo horn tougher than wood on a chopping knife
It is more resilient under shock, which is the property that matters here, and it grips well when wet. Wood is more tolerant of long term neglect. Both are good, and horn is the more comfortable of the two.
What can I actually do with the saw spine
Notching. Score two kerfs across a stick and break out the waste for traps, pot hangers and pegs. It is not a limb saw and it will frustrate you if you use it as one.
Can I take it on a hunting trip as my only knife
You can, and that is what the design is for. For field dressing specifically, a knife with a proper skinning belly will be faster and cleaner.
How long is the wait before it ships
One to two weeks of processing, then transit. Free inside the United States. Tell us in advance if there is a date you need to hit.

This thing is a beast in the best way. Edge retention has been great even after regular use. The buffalo horn handle feels amazing and the balance is perfect. Damascus blade holds a razor edge right out of the box. Couldn’t be happier with this.
Can’t stop showing this off to everyone who comes over. Nice touch that it ships from within the US even though it’s crafted in the Czech Republic. 10/10 would buy again.
My whole family was impressed when I unboxed it. Fit and finish is museum quality. You can tell real craftsmen made this by hand. This is going straight into my display case.
