The Shellcrown is a knotwork longsword with a scalloped fan pommel, a slender crossguard whose arms curl back toward the blade in a pair of scrolls, and a long line of interlaced etching running down the centre of the blade from the ricasso. The grip is wrapped in black leather over a timber core and the whole hilt is finished bright, so the etched knotwork on the blade reads as a soft grey line rather than a hard black one.

Scrolled or drooping quillons appear on European swords from the fourteenth century onward and they are not there purely for looks. Curving the ends of the guard back toward the point turns each arm into a small hook that can catch and hold an opposing blade sliding down toward the hand, which is why the shape survived on hunting swords and dress swords long after it stopped being fashionable on war swords. This one is forged, ground, heat treated and finished in the Czech Republic, and it ships with the black leather scabbard shown here.

What the scalloped pommel actually does

A fan or shell pommel is one of the more distinctive shapes in medieval hilt design and it solves a specific problem. A longsword needs a lot of mass behind the hand to keep the point controllable, but a plain heavy block sitting at the end of the grip is uncomfortable against the wrist during a rotating cut. Spreading that mass sideways into a fan gives you the same counterweight with a much shallower profile, so the pommel sits flat against the base of the palm instead of digging into it.

The flare also gives the hand something to push against. On a hand and a half sword the second hand often rides on or below the pommel rather than fully on the grip, and a spread pommel gives that hand a proper platform. Look at the way the scallops radiate from the centre and you can see the same logic that produced the wheel, the brazil nut and the scent stopper pommels of the same centuries. Each is a different answer to the question of where to put the weight without making the sword unpleasant to hold.

The etched interlace on the blade follows the older northern European habit of decorating the strongest part of the blade rather than the weakest. It sits over the ricasso and the upper third, well back from the working edge, where an etch removes no useful metal and where it stays legible because that part of the blade rarely touches anything.

1095 high carbon steel and the polished finish

The blade is 1095, a plain high carbon steel with about 0.95 percent carbon. On a long blade that is the right family of steel because it hardens deep and evenly and it tempers back into a predictable range. Ours goes into the 54 to 58 HRC band, which is where a 34 inch blade will flex under load and spring back straight rather than staying bent or cracking.

Polishing a blade this long is more work than most people expect. It is taken up through progressively finer abrasives by hand, and only after that is the interlace masked and etched. That order matters. Etch first and the polish would soften the pattern, so the pattern goes on last and the etched lines stay crisp against the mirror ground around them.

A polished high carbon blade is beautiful and it is also demanding. There is no chromium in 1095 and no plating over it, so bare steel is exposed and it will spot if it is left damp or handled and put away. That is the trade you make for a steel that sharpens easily and holds its edge.

Handling and balance

The point of balance is roughly four and a half inches ahead of the guard. With the long grip that gives you a sword you can drive one handed for a single cut and then bring the off hand onto the pommel for anything sustained. The blade tapers steadily, so the tip stays live and the sword changes line without a fight.

This is a sharp, hand forged sword sold for collecting, display and careful solo target cutting. It is not sparring equipment. Do not use it in contact drills against a partner or against another blade, and do not treat a scrolled guard as a real parry catch in practice, because a guard designed to trap a blade is also a guard that concentrates a great deal of force in a small place.

Care

A mirror polished 1095 blade wants attention. Wipe it after every handling session, because the acid in a fingerprint will etch itself into a bright surface within days in a humid room. Keep a thin film of mineral oil or camellia oil on it and refresh that film every couple of months. If a spot of orange does appear, it lifts easily with a little oil on the finest grade of steel wool worked along the length of the blade rather than across it.

Store the sword out of its scabbard for anything longer than a week. Leather is tanned with compounds that will slowly mark bright steel and it holds humidity against the blade. The work behind this piece happens in a Czech Republic workshop that has kept to the old methods. Steel is forged and heat treated by hand, the grind is taken down by eye rather than by machine, and the handle, fittings and sheath are cut and finished one at a time. Because of that, every piece carries small marks of the hand that made it.

A note on handmade variation

This longsword is hand made rather than machine made or bulk produced, so what arrives will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph. The exact reach of the scrolls on the guard, the depth of the scallops in the pommel, the weight of the etched line and the grain and tone of the leather on the grip and scabbard all shift a little from one piece to the next, because each is worked by hand. The length, the steel, the heat treat and the build are identical every time. The character is not.

It is a hand and a half. The grip is long enough to take a second hand for a full committed cut and short enough to use one handed, which is exactly what the type was designed for.

Does it arrive sharp?

Will the etched pattern rub off?

No. It is chemically etched into the surface of the steel to a real depth, not printed or laser marked on top of it, so polishing the blade will not remove it.

Can I hang it on a wall?

Yes, and it suits a horizontal two point mount that supports the blade near the guard and near the point. Do not hang it by the scabbard alone, because leather stretches under a constant load.
