A gut hook hunting knife with a mirror polished 1095 blade, a deep hook cut into the spine behind the point, a brass bolster and a scale handle in genuine stag antler pinned through with a lanyard hole at the butt. The gut hook is one of the few genuinely modern additions to a hunting knife and it earns its place. Opening an animal from the sternum to the pelvis with a plain point means running a sharp tip along the inside of the hide with the belly wall directly underneath it, and if you slip you puncture the paunch and ruin a good deal of meat. A hook does the job from the other direction: you push the point through once, turn the knife over, drop the hook under the hide and pull. The blade edge inside the hook cuts hide from underneath while the rounded back of the hook rides along the muscle wall and cannot cut it. It is a small idea that saves an enormous amount of mess. How to actually use the hook

Most people who buy a gut hook never learn to use it properly, and then complain that it drags. The trick is that the hook cuts on the pull, not the push, and it wants to be almost perpendicular to the hide rather than dragged along at a shallow angle. Make your initial entry with the point, roll the knife so the spine faces down and the hook faces up under the hide, then pull toward you in a steady sweep with the handle low. The hide feeds into the throat of the hook and the edge inside does the work.

Two things ruin the experience. The first is a dull hook, which will tear rather than cut and takes twice the force. The second is trying to use the hook through hair rather than under hide, which packs the throat and stops it dead. Enter through a slit and stay under.

The rest of the blade is a normal flat ground drop point, which is the right shape for the rest of the job. A drop point puts the tip below the line of the spine so it is easier to control inside a body cavity, and the belly ahead of the ricasso gives you a proper cutting curve for skinning and for breaking down quarters.

1095, the polish and the antler

The blade is 1095 high carbon, hardened to 56 to 58 HRC. That is the range where a hunting knife makes sense: hard enough to take a keen edge and hold it through a whole animal, soft enough that the tip and the thin throat of the hook will not chip if you catch a rib. 1095 is not stainless. It takes a better edge than most stainless steels and it sharpens faster, and the price of that is that it will stain and rust if you put it away wet, particularly after blood contact.

The mirror polish is a real hand polish through progressive grits, not a plated coating, which is why it shows a true reflection rather than a haze. A polished blade also releases from wet hide slightly better than a satin one. The rune line is acid etched into the surface. It is not Damascus and there is no pattern welding in this blade at all: it is monosteel 1095 with a surface etch.

The handle is genuine stag antler, which is naturally grippy when wet in a way that no polished synthetic can match, and no two pieces are alike. The brass bolster locks the scales to the tang and gives the hand a stop against sliding onto the edge.

Carry and the sheath

The sheath is vegetable tanned leather, wet formed to this exact blade, saddle stitched and burnished at the edges, with a belt loop that takes a standard belt. Wet forming matters on a sheath: it means the leather grips the ricasso and the bolster rather than relying entirely on a retention strap, so the knife does not rattle and does not fall out when you crouch.

Never store a carbon steel blade in a leather sheath long term. Leather is tanned with acids and it holds moisture, and a knife left in a sheath for a month will come out marked. Carry it in the sheath, store it out of it. Check your state and local law on fixed blade carry before wearing it anywhere but your own property or a hunting camp.

Care

Clean and dry the blade the moment you are finished, especially after blood, which is acidic and will etch 1095 within hours. Wipe a light film of food safe mineral oil or a light machine oil onto the blade before it goes away. Sharpen the main edge on a stone at the angle it arrives at, and sharpen the gut hook with a round ceramic rod or a chainsaw file run inside the throat, never on a flat stone, which cannot reach the curve. If a patina forms on the flats, that is normal for carbon steel and it is protective; active orange rust is not and should be removed with a fine abrasive and oil. A note on handmade variation

This knife is hand made, not machine made or bulk produced. What arrives will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph. Stag antler is a natural material and every piece has its own colour, its own pearling and its own texture, so your handle will not match the one shown. The polish carries its own grind lines, the etched rune line sits a fraction differently, and the leather takes dye its own way. The steel, the dimensions and the geometry are the same every time. The character is not.

Frequently asked questions

Is this stainless steel?

No. It is 1095 high carbon, which takes a keener edge and sharpens far more easily than stainless, at the cost of needing to be dried and oiled. If you want a knife you can leave wet in a truck, this is not it.

How do I sharpen the gut hook?

With a round ceramic rod or a small round file worked inside the curve, following the existing bevel. A flat stone cannot reach into the throat of the hook and will only round the outside of it.

Is the pattern on the blade Damascus?

No. This is monosteel 1095 and the runes are an acid etch on the surface. There is no pattern welded steel in this blade, and we would rather say that than let the photograph imply it.

Will every handle look like the photograph?

No. Stag antler varies enormously in colour, pearling and shape between pieces. Yours will be recognisably the same knife and a genuinely different handle.

Is it sharp out of the box?

Yes, both the main edge and the hook are sharpened and ready to work. Treat it as a working hunting knife from the moment you open the box.
