A Damascus headed axe with a squared hammer poll opposite the bit and a polished steel collar behind the head engraved with a Valknut. The head is forge welded from 1095 and 15N20, and the etched pattern reads as heavy concentric whorls across the whole cheek. The bit sweeps down into a shallow beard, the poll is flattened into a striking face, and the collar is held in place by two dark leather retaining rings. The haft is pale ash, gently curved and swelling into a shaped grip at the end. A dark leather edge sheath comes with it.

The Valknut on the collar is worth explaining honestly rather than confidently. It is three interlocked triangles and it survives on the Stora Hammars picture stones on Gotland, on the Oseberg ship burial and on a handful of other objects, and almost all of those contexts involve death or burial. That association, plus the fact that the objects it appears on often connect to Odin, is why it is usually read as an Odinic symbol tied to the slain. What nobody can tell you is what the Norse themselves called it or precisely what they meant by it, because no text explains it. The name Valknut is a modern Norwegian coinage. Why ash, and why the haft is curved

Ash has been the standard tool handle timber across Northern Europe for as long as anyone has been recording it, and hickory took the same role in North America. The property that matters is not hardness. It is the combination of long straight grain and high shock absorption. Ash bends a long way before it breaks, which means an overstrike that would snap a brittle hardwood only bruises ash, and the fibres run in continuous lengths down the stick so a split cannot travel sideways out of the handle.

The curve is a separate piece of engineering. A curved haft rotates the head slightly as the swing finishes, which brings the edge into the wood square rather than at an angle, and the swell at the butt gives the bottom hand something to hold against without needing to grip hard. On a straight haft you have to hang on tightly all the way through the stroke. On a curved one the shape does the work, which is why your hand is far less tired after an hour.

1095 and 15N20 Damascus and the hammer poll

The head is forge welded from 1095, a high carbon steel, and 15N20, which contains around two percent nickel. Alternating layers are welded into a billet, drawn out and folded repeatedly, then the head is shaped and the eye drifted through. The acid etch darkens the 1095 and leaves the nickel bearing 15N20 bright, so the whorls you see are a record of how that billet was moved. Hardened to 58 to 60 HRC.

The flattened poll opposite the bit is a genuine hammer face rather than a decorative lump, so this axe can drive a wedge or a tent peg without needing a second tool. That said, it is hardened Damascus rather than a soft faced hammer, and hardened steel struck against hardened steel can chip. Use it on wood and on soft metal, not on another hardened tool.

Handling and balance

The hammer poll changes the feel of this axe compared with a plain bearded head. Putting mass directly behind the eye moves the balance point back towards the middle of the head rather than out at the bit, which makes the axe feel more planted and less prone to twisting in the hand on a mis hit. It is a slightly slower swing and a more forgiving one.

Choke up under the head for controlled shaping cuts, or take it at the swell for a full stroke. This is a sharpened working and collector axe. It is not sold as a throwing axe and should not be thrown, since a hardened Damascus edge chips against stone and hard knots.

Care

The etched Damascus surface is slightly textured and rust will start in the etched valleys first, so wipe the head after every use and keep a thin film of mineral oil on it. Do not store it in the leather sheath after use, because vegetable tanned leather holds moisture against steel. Sharpen with a stone, never a powered grinder, which will draw the temper at the edge and ruin the heat treat locally. The pale ash haft wants a wiping oil once or twice a year and will darken slightly as it takes it. Feed the leather retaining rings and the sheath with a leather conditioner. Made in the Czech Republic

Every piece we sell is made by hand in the Czech Republic. The smiths there work the way the trade has been worked for a long time, heating and hammering the steel, taking the bevels down by eye, and fitting the handle and the leather one at a time. There is no automated line anywhere in it, so small differences from one piece to the next are normal and expected.

A note on handmade variation

This axe is hand made, not machine made or bulk produced, so what arrives will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph. Damascus never repeats. Your head will carry its own whorl density, its own band contrast and its own etch depth. Ash varies enormously between sticks and yours may be paler or more strongly figured than the one shown. The Valknut is cut freehand so its line weight varies. The leather rings will darken with handling. The steels, the layer construction, the hardness and the dimensions are the same every time. The figure is not.
