A bearded hand axe on a pale ash haft, with a line of Elder Futhark runes cut into the cheek of the head above the beard. The head is 1095 high carbon with a satin finish, hung on the haft and locked with a polished brass collar, and there is a second brass cap at the butt of the handle. It comes with a stitched leather cover that slips over the edge.

The beard is the hooked lower portion of the edge that hangs below the eye of the axe, and it is the defining feature of the Norse pattern. It buys a long cutting edge without the weight a full width head would carry, and it opens a gap behind the edge that a hand can move up into. Norse and Anglo Saxon axe heads recovered from graves and river beds show the same outline again and again for three hundred years, which is a fair sign it worked. Specifications

What the beard actually does

Three things. First, edge length. A bearded head puts more cutting edge in front of you for a given lump of steel, and steel was expensive, so a smith who could give a farmer a longer edge for the same iron had a better product. Second, balance. Because the extra edge hangs below the centre line rather than out in front, it lengthens the cut without pushing the head further from the haft, so the axe stays quick in the hand.

Third, and the one people notice when they use one, is the choke. The hook of the beard leaves an open space directly behind the edge and below the eye. Slide your hand up the haft into that space and you can hold the axe just under the head and use it like a heavy knife for carving, shaping a peg or taking bark off a limb. That is a genuine working feature and it is why a bearded axe was the tool a Norse household actually owned, rather than a specialised one.

Steel, ash and brass

The head is 1095 at 54 to 58 HRC. For an axe you want that range rather than a knife hardness, because an axe edge meets knots and grit and needs to deform slightly and be filed back rather than chip out. It is not stainless and it will take a patina.

Ash is the traditional haft timber across northern Europe and it earns the place. It is ring porous, so the grain is stiff along its length and flexible across it, which lets a haft absorb the shock of a strike instead of passing all of it into the wrist. Look at the end grain on yours and you should see the growth rings running roughly parallel to the cutting edge, which is how a haft is properly oriented. Brass is used for the collar and butt cap because it is soft enough to be fitted tight without splitting the timber, and it does not corrode against damp wood the way plain steel would.

Handling and balance

Hold it near the brass butt cap for a full swing and let the head do the work. The cap stops the hand sliding off the end, which matters more on a short haft than people expect. For carving, choke right up under the head into the gap behind the beard, and put your thumb along the top of the haft for control.

This is a usable hand axe rather than a wall ornament. The head is properly hardened, hung and wedged, and the edge arrives ready to cut. It will split kindling, limb a branch and shape wood. It is not a felling axe and the haft is not long enough to want to use it as one.

Care

Dry the head after use and put a light film of oil on it. Mineral oil, camellia oil or a light gun oil all work. Sharpen with a file and a stone rather than a powered wheel, which will draw the temper out of a thin edge before you notice. Keep the leather cover on the edge in storage but do not store the head permanently sheathed in a damp shed, since leather holds moisture. Wipe the ash with boiled linseed oil once or twice a year and the haft will stay tight and will not raise a splinter. Brass polish restores the collar if it dulls. More detail is in steel care.

A note on handmade variation

Hand made, not machine made or bulk produced, so what arrives will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph. Ash is a natural timber and every haft has its own grain, colour and figure, so yours may run paler or show more streaking than the one photographed. The rune band is cut individually, so spacing and depth vary a little. Forged heads differ slightly in the sweep of the beard because each is drawn out under a hammer. The steel, the hardness, the geometry and the build are the same every time. The character is not.

Is it sharp when it arrives

Yes. It comes with a working edge that will cut wood straight out of the box. Keep the leather cover on it in transit and storage.

What do the runes say

The band is a decorative Elder Futhark inscription rather than a specific phrase we translate on request. If you want a particular word or name in runes, order the engraving option and we will cut yours.

Can I actually use this or is it decorative

You can use it. The head is hardened, hung and wedged properly and the haft is real ash. It is a working hand axe, though it is short for felling anything substantial.

Can the haft be replaced if it breaks

Yes. It is a standard hung head, so a competent shop can rehang it on a new ash haft. A haft broken by ordinary hard use is not a forging defect, so it sits outside the warranty.

Is the leather cover included

It is. A stitched leather cover that slips over the edge comes with every axe.

Will the brass go dull

It will dull to a soft gold over a year or two, which most owners prefer on an axe. Brass polish on a cloth brings it straight back.
