The Duskbroad is a hand forged espada ropera, and the name is worth translating because it explains the whole object. Ropera comes from ropa, meaning clothes. An espada ropera is the sword of the clothes, the one worn with ordinary dress rather than with armour, and the term appears in Spanish inventories from the late fifteenth century onwards. It is the earliest name we have for the civilian sword that would eventually become the rapier, and at this stage in its development it had not yet given up the cut. This blade is broad, fullered near the guard and tapers to a sharp point, which tells you the owner expected to cut as well as thrust.

This one is forged and finished in the Czech Republic. The blade is 1095 high carbon steel, hardened and tempered, ground broad with a narrow fuller and taken to a mirror polish. The hilt is blackened iron, with small side rings and a knuckle bow, brass caps on the quillon ends and a brass conical pommel. The grip is dark hardwood, turned and left bare. It ships with the fitted dark leather scabbard shown, mounted with a heavy brass throat and a brass chape.

Why the blade is broad and the point is tapered

The blade keeps its width well down the length and then tapers steadily to a sharp point. The width carries mass out along the edge, which is what makes a draw cut work, and the taper gives a point that still thrusts cleanly. That mix of cut and thrust is what separates an espada ropera from the narrow rapiers that came after it.

The narrow fuller in the forte takes weight out of the section near the guard without weakening it, so the sword handles lighter than its width suggests.

Why 1095 high carbon steel and not stainless

Stainless resists rust because it carries a great deal of chromium, and that chromium locks carbon into coarse carbides scattered through the steel. In a blade that flexes and takes lateral loads, those carbides are the flaws where cracks begin. The manufacturing answer is to leave stainless swords soft, which is why so many of them arrive with a permanent slight bend and never straighten.

1095 is close to plain iron and carbon. It hardens deeply and evenly, tempers to a predictable figure, and at 54 to 58 HRC gives a broad blade a durable working edge and real spring. It rusts if left wet or fingerprinted, which is the honest trade, and a cloth with a little oil on it is the whole solution. The full comparison is at Damascus versus stainless.

The bare hardwood grip

The grip is turned hardwood, dark and close grained, left bare rather than wrapped in leather or wire. Bare wood was common on working swords for good reasons. There is nothing to stretch, absorb sweat or come unwound, the surface can be turned with subtle swells that index the hand, and a dense timber has enough natural friction to stay put without a covering. It also gains rather than loses with age, darkening and taking a soft sheen from handling.

Bare wood does want the right conditions. Direct sunlight bleaches and eventually checks the surface. Dry heat from a radiator or a car in summer will open the grain, and repeated damp will swell it. Store the sword somewhere with stable humidity, and give the grip a very light coat of hard wax or a wood oil once a year, buffed off rather than left sitting. The routine is in wooden handle care.

Care and sharpening

Wipe the blade after handling and keep a thin film of mineral or camellia oil on the steel. A broad mirror polished flat shows fingerprints more obviously than any other surface we make, and prints left for a week or two etch permanent ghosts. Keep abrasives off the blackened hilt, since polish will cut through the finish and leave bright patches. The brass can be left to patinate or brought up with a mild polish and a soft cloth. The edges arrive sharp. To refresh them, use a whetstone and follow the existing bevel with long even passes down both sides, then strop. Take a little care at the tip, where it is easy to change the profile by pressing too hard. See sharpening with a whetstone.

Made in the Czech Republic

This piece is made by hand in the Czech Republic, in a workshop that still works the old way. The steel is forged, ground, heat treated and finished by smiths who learned the trade from the people before them, and the wood, horn and leather are cut and fitted by hand rather than pressed out on a line. That is also why no two pieces come out exactly the same.

A note on handmade variation

This piece is hand forged, not machine made or bulk produced, so what arrives will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph. Hardwood is a natural material and its grain, figure and depth of colour vary from blank to blank. The blackening takes its own way on every hilt, the brass castings are filed by hand and the leather of the scabbard takes dye differently across hides. The dimensions, the steel and the build are the same every time. The character is not.

Frequently asked questions

Is the point sharp

Yes. The blade tapers to a sharp point that thrusts cleanly, while the broad section behind it keeps real cutting mass, which is what an espada ropera was for.

Are the edges sharp

Yes, both edges arrive with a working sharpness that will cut. They are not honed to a razor, because a razor edge on a sword chips on first contact with anything hard.

Is an espada ropera the same as a rapier

It is the ancestor. Espada ropera is the earlier Spanish term for a civilian sword worn with clothes, and at this stage it still has a broad cutting blade. Rapier is what the same family became once the blade lengthened and narrowed until cutting was no longer part of it.

Can I have runes engraved on it

Does the bare wooden grip need any treatment

Very little. A light wax or wood oil once a year, buffed off, and sensible storage away from direct sun and dry heat. Do not soak it or leave it in a damp garage.
