Trenchknot is a bayonet pattern fighting knife built on classic military lines and finished with Norse work. The blade is 1095 high carbon steel with a long narrow fuller down each side, a spear point, and a Valknut etched into the flat just ahead of the guard. The crossguard carries a full muzzle ring, the grip is solid steel turned with deep ribs for purchase in a wet hand, and the pommel holds a sprung press stud catch of the sort used to lock a bayonet onto a rifle lug. It ships in a hard scabbard that carries on a belt.

The Valknut is three interlocked triangles, and it appears on the Stora Hammars picture stones and on the Oseberg ship burial, in both cases beside scenes that involve the dead being received. Nobody in the ninth century wrote down what it meant, so anyone who tells you the exact interpretation is guessing, but the association with Odin and with the passage out of life is about as firm as the evidence allows. Trenchknot is forged, ground, heat treated and assembled by hand by hand in the Czech Republic.

What the muzzle ring and the press stud are for

A bayonet is defined by two fittings, and Trenchknot carries both. The ring in the crossguard is the muzzle ring, and on a rifle it slips over the barrel just behind the muzzle so the blade cannot pivot sideways under load. The catch in the pommel is the release, and it drops into a lug under the barrel so the blade cannot slide off when the rifle is thrust. Together they turn a knife into a rigid extension of the rifle. On this piece those fittings are historically shaped rather than cut to any modern rifle specification, and we do not sell Trenchknot as a mount for a firearm. What they give you in the hand is a knife with an unusually secure guard and a heavy butt, which is why bayonets have always doubled as camp and utility knives.

The steel, the fullers and the ribbed grip

1095 is a plain high carbon steel that takes a fine edge and holds it well at knife hardness. We normalise, quench in warm oil, and temper to 54 to 58 HRC, which is on the tougher side of the range because a spear point takes prying loads that would chip a harder edge. The two fullers are ground with a wheel and then blended by hand. They save weight in the middle of the blade and stiffen the section against bending, which matters on a blade this narrow. The grip is solid steel rather than wood or plastic, turned and then cut with deep ribs. Steel grips are cold in the hand in winter and heavier than the alternatives, and in exchange they cannot crack, swell, shrink or rot, which is exactly why military patterns kept using them.

Handling and balance

The heavy steel grip pulls the balance point back almost to the guard, which makes the knife feel far lighter in the hand than its weight on a scale suggests, and makes the point very controllable. The ribs run across the grip rather than along it, so the hand locks against forward and backward slip rather than rotation. That combination suits thrusting and detail work more than chopping. The blade is fully sharpened. Treat it as a working knife rather than a display piece.

Care

Everything on this knife except the scabbard is bare high carbon steel, which means the whole thing will rust if it is left damp. Dry it after use, including the ribs on the grip where water sits, and keep a light film of oil on the blade and the guard. The press stud has a spring behind it. A single drop of light machine oil at the catch once a year keeps it moving. Do not store the knife in the scabbard for months on end. Made in the Czech Republic

This is a handmade piece from the Czech Republic, made in a workshop that still forges, grinds and finishes by hand instead of stamping parts out. The smiths there have kept the older way of working, and the wood, horn and leather are shaped and fitted by hand as well. Two pieces of the same design will never be identical, and that is part of what you are buying.

A note on handmade variation

This bayonet is hand made, not machine made or bulk produced, so what arrives will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph. The depth of the Valknut etch, the exact spacing of the ribs on the grip, the length of the fuller and the polish left on the flats all vary slightly because each one is worked by hand. The dimensions, the steel, the heat treat and the build are the same every time. The character is not.

Frequently asked questions

Will this fit my rifle?

No. The muzzle ring and catch are historically shaped rather than cut to a specific rifle standard, and we sell this as a knife rather than as a firearm accessory. Do not attempt to mount it.

Is it sharp out of the box?

Yes. It arrives with a working sharp edge along the main bevel and a sharpened section on the false edge near the point.

Is the steel grip slippery when wet?

Less than you would think. The ribs are cut deep and spaced so the fingers sit between them. It is a firmer hold wet than a smooth wooden grip, though it is colder in the hand in winter.

Does the scabbard have a belt loop?

It comes with a frog that takes a belt up to two inches wide, so it hangs from a normal belt without extra hardware.

What does the Valknut actually mean?

Honestly, nobody knows for certain. It appears on memorial stones and in a ship burial in company with scenes of the dead, and it is strongly linked with Odin, but no surviving text explains it.
