The Quillhide is a belt sheath sold on its own, cut from oxblood vegetable tanned bridle leather, hand stitched around a full welt, closed with a steel snap retention strap and finished with a raven tooled into the face. It carries vertically on a belt and it is built to take a fixed blade knife of up to about six inches. The knife in the photographs is not included. This is the sheath.

Most people who buy a sheath separately are replacing one that failed, and sheaths fail in a very predictable way. A knife sits in a sheath edge forward. If the two faces of the leather are simply stitched to each other, the stitching thread sits directly in the path of that edge, and every time the knife goes in or comes out the edge saws at it. Give it a year of daily carry and the knife cuts its own way out through the seam. The fix is old, simple and used on every sheath worth owning, and it is the welt.

Cut, tooled, stitched and burnished in the Czech Republic. It ships with a spare pair of snap studs and a tin of clear leather balm. You will find it filed with the scabbards and sheaths, along with the rest of the Viking knives.

What a welt is and why a sheath needs one

A welt is a narrow strip of leather sandwiched between the front and the back of the sheath around the whole cutting edge side, so that the two panels are never actually touching. The stitching passes through front, welt and back. That does three things at once. It sets the thread back out of the path of the blade edge, so the knife can no longer saw through your stitching. It opens a channel inside the sheath the exact width of the blade, so the edge never rubs the leather faces. And it stiffens the mouth so the sheath holds its shape and you can put the knife away one handed without looking.

You can tell a welted sheath from an unwelted one from across a room once you know. Look at the stitched edge in profile. A welted sheath is noticeably thicker along the seam than across the body, because there are three layers of leather there instead of two. Cheap production sheaths skip it because it costs another cut, another glue up and a slower stitch line. Every sheath we make has one, and this one carries steel reinforcing studs at the stress points where the welt line meets the mouth as well.

The leather and the tannage

This is vegetable tanned bridle leather, which matters more than the colour does. Vegetable tanning uses tannins drawn from bark and other plant material and takes weeks in a series of pits. Chrome tanning, which is what most modern leather is, uses chromium salts and takes about a day. The chrome process makes soft, stable, water resistant leather that is excellent for jackets and terrible for sheaths, because it stays floppy and because the residual salts in it can corrode a carbon steel blade left sitting against them.

Vegetable tanned hide is firm, it holds a wet formed shape when it dries, it takes a tooled impression and keeps it, and it burnishes to a glassy edge. Bridle leather is vegetable tanned hide that has then been stuffed with waxes and oils on both sides, which is why it feels dense rather than dry and why it darkens rather than cracks as it ages. At 8 to 9 ounces it is around 3.5 millimetres thick. The raven is stamped into the damp hide with hand cut tools and then set, so it is a compression in the leather rather than a print on it.

Leather is the easiest of our materials to personalise and the results last as long as the sheath does. A rune line runs well down the length of the face beside the raven, or across the retention strap where it is read when the sheath is closed. Fit and sizing

This sheath is cut for a fixed blade of up to about six inches long and about an inch and a half at the widest point of the blade, with a normal full tang handle. It is a general fit rather than a moulded fit to one specific knife, so a slightly smaller blade will sit in it happily and the snap strap over the handle is what holds everything in place. A blade longer or noticeably wider than that will not go in.

Measure your knife before ordering. Measure from the front of the handle to the tip for length, and across the widest part of the blade for width. If your knife is close to the limit, say so in the order notes and we will check before we cut. The belt loop takes belts up to one and three quarter inches wide, which covers a normal trouser belt and most work belts. If you need a wider loop for a heavy duty or reenactment belt, ask and we will make it.

Care

Feed the leather two or three times a year with the clear balm supplied, or any neutral leather conditioner. Work a small amount in with your fingers, leave it twenty minutes and buff off the excess with a cloth. That is what keeps bridle leather supple and stops it drying at the fold. Do not use mink oil or heavy grease, which soften the hide until it loses its shape.

If it gets soaked, let it dry slowly at room temperature away from any heat source. Drying leather on a radiator or in a car in the sun will make it hard and brittle permanently. Do not store a carbon steel knife in the sheath long term, because leather holds moisture against steel and vegetable tanned hide is faintly acidic. The steel snaps need nothing beyond a wipe. The edges can be re burnished with a damp cloth and a little friction if they ever fluff.

Made in the Czech Republic

This piece is made by hand in the Czech Republic, in a workshop that still works the old way. The steel is forged, ground, heat treated and finished by smiths who learned the trade from the people before them, and the wood, horn and leather are cut and fitted by hand rather than pressed out on a line. That is also why no two pieces come out exactly the same.

A note on handmade variation

This is hand made, not machine made and not bulk produced, so what arrives will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph. Leather is skin and it carries its own record. Grain runs tighter on the back of a hide and looser at the belly, healed scars and insect marks show through the dye, and the oxblood takes differently across a single side, so one sheath can read bright red brown and the next a deep burgundy.

The tooled raven is stamped by hand, so its impression sits a fraction differently on each. Stitch spacing is marked with a wheel and pricked by hand. What does not vary is the specification. The leather weight, the welt, the stitch, the hardware and the fit range are the same on every one. The character is what changes, and it will keep changing as it darkens with use. Will my knife fit

If the blade is no more than about six inches long and about an inch and a half wide, yes. Measure yours from the front of the handle to the tip before ordering, and put the figures in the order notes if it is close.

Will it hold the knife upside down

Yes. The snap strap goes over the handle and holds the knife in even inverted. Without the strap fastened the friction of the mouth alone will hold most knives, but do not rely on it.

It keeps the stitching out of the path of the blade edge so the knife cannot cut its own way out of the seam, and it opens a channel so the edge never rubs the leather. It is the single feature that decides whether a sheath lasts.
