The Duskthorn is a large Norse dagger, a broad double edged blade with a strong central ridge, an arched crossguard carrying a cut interlace band, a smooth black grip and a polished brazil nut pommel peened over the tang. It ships with a tan leather sheath. At twenty inches overall it sits in the gap between a knife and a short sword, which is exactly where the originals sat.

The pommel shape has a name and a history. Arms historians call it the brazil nut, after the profile, and it appears across northern Europe from roughly the tenth century onward as the older lobed Viking pommel gives way to something simpler to make. It is one solid piece rather than a bar with lobes brazed on, which meant a smith could produce a serviceable hilt in a fraction of the time. That shift from decorated assembly to single forged mass is one of the clearest markers you can use to date a hilt by eye, and it is a good example of a design change driven by production rather than by fashion. The central ridge and why a dagger needs one

Run a thumb down the flat of this blade and you will feel it rise to a ridge along the middle and fall away to each edge. That is a diamond section, and on a short double edged blade it is the difference between a stiff blade and a springy one. A flat blade with two bevels has almost no resistance to bending sideways. Put a ridge down the centre and you have created a spine running the full length of the blade with material distributed exactly where bending stress is highest, without adding width or much weight.

The cost is cutting performance. A diamond section blade has a thicker, more obtuse edge than a flat ground one, so it cuts less cleanly and thrusts far better. That trade is deliberate on a dagger, because a dagger is a thrusting tool first. It is also why the point on the Duskthorn is a true point rather than the rounded tip you find on many Viking sword blades.

The steel and the fittings

The blade is 1095 high carbon steel, quenched and tempered back to 54 to 58 HRC. On a short stiff blade you could go harder, but there is nothing to be gained: the section already provides the rigidity, and a softer temper means a blade that will take a lateral load without any risk of a snap.

The guard is arched rather than straight, which is a small piece of ergonomics rather than decoration. The curve follows the line of a closed fist, so the hand sits further forward and closer to the blade than a flat bar would allow, and the arch sheds a sliding blade away from the fingers. The interlace band is cut into the face of the guard after fitting. The pommel is peened, not screwed. If you look at the top you will see the hammered end of the tang, which is the honest sign of a hilt that is mechanically locked rather than glued together.

Handling and balance

Balance sits just ahead of the guard, so the dagger feels almost weightless in the hand and points naturally. Held in a forward grip with the thumb on the flat, it is fast and accurate. Held reversed, the brazil nut pommel gives a solid stop against the heel of the hand.

The grip is around four inches with a slight waist, which locks a hand in place without needing a tight squeeze. Both edges are sharp on arrival, so treat it as a sharp tool from the moment you open the box. It is a collector and display piece and a genuinely capable blade, but it is not intended for edge on edge contact against another blade.

Care

Wipe the blade with a light oil after handling and before storage. Plain carbon steel will spot from a fingerprint left overnight, and a satin finish shows it clearly. Do not leave the dagger sheathed for long periods, because vegetable tanned leather holds moisture against steel. Feed the sheath with a neutral balm once or twice a year. Made in the Czech Republic

This is a handmade piece from the Czech Republic, made in a workshop that still forges, grinds and finishes by hand instead of stamping parts out. The smiths there have kept the older way of working, and the wood, horn and leather are shaped and fitted by hand as well. Two pieces of the same design will never be identical, and that is part of what you are buying.

A note on handmade variation

Each Duskthorn is hand made rather than machine made or bulk produced, so yours will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph. The ridge line is ground by eye and its exact height varies. The grip is polished by hand and reads slightly different in the light from one to the next. Vegetable tanned leather darkens at its own rate, so two sheaths made on the same day will not stay the same colour. The dimensions, the material and the build are the same every time. The character is not.

Frequently asked questions

Is this legally a dagger or a sword?

At twenty inches overall with a fourteen inch blade it is a large dagger. Rules on double edged fixed blades vary a great deal by state and by city, so please check your own local law before ordering.

Is it sharp out of the box?

Yes, on both edges. Ask in the order notes if you would prefer it finished blunt for display.

Can I throw it?

No. A peened hilt with a hard pommel is not built for repeated impact and a diamond section point will bend on stone. Throwing knives are a different tool entirely.

Will the black grip fade?

Not in normal use. Keep it out of long direct sunlight and away from solvents and it stays as it arrived.

Can runes go on the sheath rather than the blade?

Yes. Stamped runes on tan leather are one of the best looking things we do. Say where you want them in the engraving option.
