A rune engraved axe is a working head with Norse letters or knotwork cut into the steel, usually along the cheek or as a band behind the edge. The marks are etched or struck, not printed, so they stay in the metal after the polish comes off. People look for this when a plain axe feels too anonymous, whether it is going on a wall, into a reenactment kit, or under a tree with someone’s name attached to it.
The engraved heads on this page
The clearest examples are the ones cut specifically for it: a felling axe with a single bit forest head, knotwork engraving and an American ash handle, a bearded Viking head on a 26 inch ash haft with an etched rune band and knotwork cheeks, a 20 inch Celtic knotwork head, a Damascus bearded head on a 22 inch ash haft with a rune bordered edge, and a rune engraved head on a hickory haft that ships in a carved hardwood presentation box. Around them sits the wider run of Viking bearded axes at 18 to 22 inches on ash, birch, oak and rosewood hafts, most with a fitted leather blade cover and a gift box. Heads are plain 1095 high carbon at 54 to 58 HRC or forge welded 1095 and 15N20 Damascus at 58 to 60 HRC. A few seax knives and camp knives carry the same cut work on the blade or the bolster. Prices run from 149 dollars to 560 dollars.
Reading the marks and adding your own
Most of the bands here use Elder Futhark letters, and the shapes are not decorative filler. The Elder Futhark alphabet sets out what each stave is and how it was actually used, and the broader symbols like the valknut and the vegvisir are covered in the guide to Norse symbols. Read one before you buy an axe with letters on it, because a mark you cannot explain is a mark someone else will ask you about. If none of the stock cuts suit, a name, a date or a symbol can be added after the piece lands: the engraved and personalised range shows how that looks in practice, and the plain heads waiting for it are in Viking axes.
