The Gleambeard is a bearded axe in plain 1095 high carbon steel, taken to a full mirror polish rather than left in a working finish. The head is a deep crescent with a long hooked horn rising above the eye and a beard that sweeps down and back to a fine point, and a Valknut is cut into the flat of the upper cheek. The haft is pale ash driven through the eye and standing slightly proud at the top. It ships with a stitched leather blade cover.

A mirror polished axe head is a deliberate choice and it changes what the piece is for. Polish shows every line of the forging, every subtlety in the curve of the beard, and any wobble in the grind. It is also the least forgiving finish in existence, because there is nowhere for a mistake to hide. On a head shaped this cleanly it is the right call. This axe is made by hand in the Czech Republic. Specifications

How a head is hung on a haft

The hole through an axe head is called the eye, and it is not drilled. It is punched through the hot steel with a chisel and then opened out by driving a tapered steel drift through it, which pushes the metal aside rather than removing it. That matters, because the grain of the steel flows around the eye instead of being cut across, and a drifted eye is far stronger than a bored one would be.

The eye is not a straight tunnel either. It is slightly wider at the top than at the bottom, so the haft can only be driven in from below and wedges tight as it goes. Once it is seated, a wedge driven into the top of the haft spreads the wood outward to fill the taper, and the whole assembly locks. That is why a properly hung head does not fly off and why you should never hang an axe by driving the haft in from the top.

The Valknut cut into the cheek is the tricursal form, three genuinely separate triangles interlocked so that each passes over one neighbour and under the other and the figure cannot be pulled apart. It appears on Gotlandic picture stones and in the Oseberg ship burial, almost always in scenes connected to Odin and to the dead. The modern name is Norwegian and means knot of the slain. What the Norse themselves called it is not recorded.

The steel, the polish and the ash

The head is 1095 high carbon steel, hardened and tempered so the edge sits at 54 to 58 HRC. On an axe that range is the right one. Harder steel holds an edge longer but chips when it meets a knot at speed, and an axe meets knots. At this hardness the edge takes impact, rolls rather than fractures if you are unlucky, and comes back on a stone in a few minutes.

The mirror finish is worked up through progressively finer abrasives and then buffed. It looks superb and it has one genuine practical benefit, which is that a polished surface has fewer microscopic valleys for moisture to sit in, so it resists rust slightly better than a rough finish. It also shows every fingerprint, so keep a cloth nearby. The haft is ash, untreated, chosen because its long straight fibres absorb shock rather than transmitting it into the wrist, and because ash survives a missed strike that would split oak.

Handling and balance

Seventeen inches is a short one handed haft, which puts the axe in the hatchet class rather than the felling class. Hold it at the end for reach or slide up under the head for close carving work, which the deep crescent allows because there is a gap behind the beard for your fingers. The head is light enough that the axe never feels like it is pulling you.

The edge arrives sharp. Keep the cover on it when it is not in your hand and be honest about your swing arc before you start. A short haft means the arc ends close to your own legs.

Care

A mirror polish is easier to keep clean than a rough finish and much less forgiving about neglect, because a rust freckle on polished steel is visible from across a room. Wipe the head after every use, dry it completely and leave a thin film of mineral oil on it. Get oil into the cut lines of the Valknut, since fine engraved lines are where rust starts. Wipe fingerprints off with a soft cloth rather than letting the acid in them sit. Give the ash haft a thin coat of boiled linseed oil once or twice a year to stop it drying and shrinking away from the head. Our steel care guide covers rust removal in detail.

This axe is made by hand in the Czech Republic and imported by Ransack Viking. It is not drop shipped from an importer catalogue. Every piece is opened, checked and photographed before it is listed, then shipped from our warehouse in Memphis, Tennessee. Processing runs one to two weeks because a mirror finish is slow to bring up and these are made in small runs. US shipping is free, returns are accepted within seven days, and the lifetime warranty against defects in forging, grind, heat treat and fittings has no end date and needs no receipt.

A note on handmade variation

This axe is made by hand, not machine made or bulk produced, so what arrives will not be a pixel for pixel copy of the photograph. The crescent is forged and ground by eye, so the sweep of the beard and the reach of the horn sit fractionally differently on every head. Ash varies in grain, figure and pale tone from board to board. The cut Valknut varies a hair in line weight because a person cut it. The edge length, the steel, the heat treat and the build stay the same. The character does not.

Frequently asked questions

Is the head Damascus

No. This one is plain 1095 high carbon steel taken to a mirror polish. What you are seeing is reflection, not pattern welded layering. There are Damascus bearded axes elsewhere in the range.

Is it sharp when it arrives

Yes. It ships with a working edge under a leather cover. Take the cover off carefully.

Will the mirror finish scratch

If you use it, yes, and that is normal. Light marks can be brought back with fine polishing compound. If you want it to stay perfect, treat it as a display and gift piece rather than a wood axe.

Can I actually chop with it

Yes. It is a properly hung head on an ash haft at a real working hardness. Kindling and camp wood are fine. Keep it out of nails, stone and frozen timber.

Can the Valknut be replaced with my own design

Yes. A chosen engraving replaces the existing one rather than sitting beside it. The haft is an alternative surface if you want the Valknut kept.
