Choosing by what it is for

To hang on a wall

Damascus, and the longer the better. Pattern and presence matter more than edge retention.

To take camping

High-carbon, a bearded axe or a full-tang fixed blade. Accept that you will oil it.

To cook with daily

D2 or stainless. A kitchen blade lives near water and you do not want to think about it.

To give as a gift

Damascus, engraved. The pattern makes it unrepeatable and the mark makes it theirs.
